REM is one of those bands that somehow slipped through the cracks with me. I really enjoy most of their popular singles. I'd like to dive more into their catalog. What's the best place to start?

Agree that Peter Buck is underrated, but he is not the kind of guitarist who plays like it's important for people to recognize him as great, if that makes sense. More like The Edge and Keith Richards, he is responsible for the very distinctive sound of a great band.

everyone will have a different take. Just don't start with Out of Time.

It sounded a lot Like Tom Petty to me.
I would have never thought that
Now I can’t unhear it

Start at Chronic Town and go through Life's Rich Pageant. Four albums and an EP. After that, I can't really recommend anything as far as full albums go, but a few of the songs are worth it.

Me too. Well said and exactly right.

I remember asking my mother to purchase Winger's debut album and she came home with REM's Green album. I was like, WTF, mom, I asked for Winger! My mother responded that the Winger album was all sold out, so one of the employee's recommended the REM album instead. I said, WTF, mom, REM?! Those guys are weird!
I would've been about 11.

I can remember the first time I heard it. Me and my brother were at my uncle's place for a week, helping him build a new barn. He lived out in the real sticks, and could only pick up two TV channels, and one of those was public TV. So we would just listen to the radio, on this this Panasonic Jambox I had, and play cards and some guitar.
One night we were listening to the Auburn University station and they played that song. They were playing some Bob Dylan and other stuff, that you never heard on radio.
It sounded like Tom Petty vocally to me then (that particular song), and always has.
My brother became a big R.E.M. fan. I liked some of their stuff, but not all of it.

I would go chronically and observe how their sound builds and changes.

I love REM, own their entire catalog. But I always thought Mills was their weakest link. Never cared for his playing and he's a real dousch nozzle of a person.
Disagree, except for the dousch part. I was in a band in Athens with some guys who were also in another group with Mike Mills. I was rehearsing with our band, and after our time was up, Mike Mills was on the way to rehearse for their side project. At the time, I was driving my boss's work truck as a personal vehicle, and he had a Bush/Cheney sticker on it. I was told I needed to scram before Mike showed up or he'd turn around and go back home. That's how much he hates republicans, he is a true far left commie dick.
But he's an excellent musician.

He posts on the Georgia board.

I bought Murmur in 1983, saw them live in New Orleans the next year, and thus began my adoration of the best American band of the last 50 yrs.
Heh, I was probably at the same concert - REM - Saenger, in 1985, though. What a craptacular concert. Stipe in a dress did not impress the women (or the guys, honestly). The acoustics were dogshit (the real problem). The dates couldn't wait to leave, and honestly the sound quality was so bad I was on their side.

Funny you mention that because every time I have seen REM (several through Monster) they never sounded good
