I just can't see how you can listen to Metallica and call that hard rock or anything other than heavy metal.

I love hard rock. I listen to hard rock bands from the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, and whatever few remain today. No hard rock band in existence is as heavy as Metallica on that record.

It may seem soft compared to more extreme metal subgenres and even to Metallica's prior material, but it's still very much a heavy metal release.

Also, what the hell would you call Death Magnetic?

It's not metal. Listen to this album and then listen to any Slayer album after and it's obvious which one is metal.

I disagree. The Black Album is hard rock. I put it up there with AC/DC

When Cliff died the Metal in Metallica died with him. They got away from that sound they had. Its not heavy metal like Slayer or Pantera. The previous albums were but Black, Load, Re-Load is not even close to that level.

Death Magnetic is them going back to their roots but its too late for that. They sold out with the Black Album.

I dont listen to any Metallica album anymore unless Cliff is on bass and I bought the Black Album when it came out. Its good, its mainstream but its not the Metallica we all grew up with.

Slayer is not the benchmark for metal...Black Sabbath is. Thrash metal is inherently a more extreme sub-genre when juxtaposed with traditional heavy metal, doom metal, glam metal, NWOBHM, etc. It's faster and more aggressive.

However, just because a thrash metal band slows down that doesn't mean that they no longer retain their metal label.

Soooo, ...And Justice For All isn't a legitimate metal record?

Again, Slayer and Pantera do not constitute the litmus test for metal. Slayer was at one point one of the heaviest bands in the world. If something isn't as heavy as Slayer, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's not considered metal.

I'm not disagreeing with that, but that matters little when discussing which genre of music the record is classified as.

I remember people thinking Metallica sold out when One went mainstream, which I thought was silly. IMO Justice was their darkest album.

They were accused of selling out when they put Fade to Black on Ride the Lightning.

Metal fans are a finicky bunch. It doesn't take much for them to accuse a band of selling out. The Black Album is definitely a departure from the fast, thrashy stuff they were doing before, but it was still a good album that seemed like a natural expression at that point in the bands career. Just because it was slow, doesn't mean they sold out...that wasn't until Load

I mean, what else was there for them to do after justice? I can understand them wanting to try and do something different. BTW my Metallica album rating (for now):
1-AJFA
2-MOP
3-RTL
4-KEA
5-Black album
6-everything else

It's also the album in which James blew his voice out. To me that is the biggest reason their sound and style changed. If he doesn't blow his voice out, I don't think there is the drastic departure between pre and post Black Album Metallica.
