I just received a record player as a birthday gift. I have a gift card of $200.00 to an online music store. I realize that I may have to come out of pocket some, but what are 10 essential vinyl records to start off a collection?
I'd like to get a mixture of eras, genres, and styles, but to help you out, I'll rattle off some stuff I've been listening to recently: Willie Nelson, The Horrors, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Radiohead (reckoner Radiohead ), Bruce Springsteen, Tame Impala, Sturgill Simpson, Allman Brothers, U2, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, War on Drugs, Tame Impala.

Seems like you have a pretty big list to choose from. Just get your favorites from those artists if they have them available on vinyl.

The Beatles - Abbey Road
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
Led Zeppelin - Either III or IV
ABB - At Fillmore East
The Who - Who's Next
The Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed or Sticky Fingers
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
The Eagles - Hotel California
Boston - Boston
Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde or Joni Mitchell - Blue
(Overall - that is a fairly narrow era, but I would start my next list with Black Sabbath and end, probably with GnR Appetite for Destruction)

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
U2 - The Joshua Tree
The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream
Tame Impala - Lonerism

Those are some of my best-sounding records.

Ultimately the goal (for me at least) is to have everything in vinyl but to start with a top 10 I've loved in my collection that would be some good starters:
1. Arcade Fire "The Suburbs"
2. My Morning Jacket "Circuital"
3. Paul Simon "Graceland"
4. Tame Impala "Lonerism"
5. Wilco "A Ghost is Born"
6. TV on the Radio "Nine Types of Light"
7. LCD Soundsystem "Sound of Silver"
8. Radiohead "In Rainbows"
9. Mac Demarco "This Old Dog"
10. War on Drugs "Lost in the Dream"
You should be able to average $20 for all 10 of those. Obviously any Zeppelin/Floyd/Beatles is going to be great but those tend to average $30-40 new and are still pricey for the most part in any good condition used.

Outside of what you said, I'd recommend
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust or Hunky Dory
Elton John - Honkey Chateau
Velvet Underground - Loaded
Maybe something from talking heads if you like them.
