is shawn lane even marginally as popular as Prince?

Absolutely not. Most people have never heard of him. But among guitar aficionados, probably so.

Similarly, Yuja Wang. Most people have probably never heard of her but among pianists, she is well known.

But every 17yo on Broadway in Nashville can play circles around that. So can most 40 something dad rockers that have been playing guitar for over ten years.

Debate all you want about "feel" and songwriting, what sounds good and doesn't, but that is tiers below what the best guitarists can do from a difficulty standpoint. That solo was nothing special on a pure technique standpoint even in the blues genre.

This is like the folks who say Jack White just plays simple riffs that a kid could bang out. Well, why don’t the kids do it and make hot records?

Yes, I’m sure there are studio musicians or Chinese kids on YouTube who are technically proficient. Tell them to hit the stage and show their stuff.

I don't think anyone is questioning his popularity. What some of us take issue with is the level of his musical acumen vs the GOAT claim.

the exact same thing is said about Dave Davies…his riffs are simple and easy to play, which is true. He did however compose them and in doing so made music that will endure forever.

if it was easy to do that, then it would have been done before LOL

There should be more threads/posts about Stanley - like him playing Stairway on two guitars at the same time:

Just to throw this out there... how many of yall know Prince joined a cult later in his life? I was born and raised in it. It wasn't until he died that I learned the rumor was true.
For some TD sleuth that wants to dig deeper, it's a religion that doesn't believe Jesus died on a cross.

And this relates to his status as a guitarist, musician, or song writing talent?
