- Lynyrd Skynyrd was/is amazingly overrated and it infuriates me when people try to associate them with The Allman Brothers/Little Feat/other awesome southern bands
- The Strokes... MEH
- There hasn't been vaguely decent mainstream country music since 70's Willie Nelson (this isn't that unpopular, I don't think)
- Stevie Ray Vaughan... MEH. I get that he was a great guitarist, I really do. There are about 234982347258 blues artists I'd listen to before him.
- Cat Stevens doesn't get 1/1000th of the credit he deserves
- Real Estate is one of the 5 best bands out there right now
not that familiar with Real Estate, but I'm on board with the rest of it

my Limp Bizkit station on Pandora could very well be my favorite station that I listen to.

I'll keep playing since this topic seems to still be doing well:
-If you pretend like you like noise-rock/no-wave/whatever you're a pretentious douche. No one actually likes that shite. It's terrible.
-Arcade Fire is probably the best band of the 2000's
-I don't find Jimi Hendrix all that interesting. I appreciate him and understand he is a beast on the guitar, but I've never REALLY liked his albums all that much.

I think so many people call Clapton overrated that he is now underrated, if that makes sense

There are plenty great guitarists that make dogshit music.
We don't disagree here at all. That's my point. Keith Urban may have a bunch of lame and annoying songs, but he can play the guitar.

what band would you call noise rock? Sonic Youth and bands of that ilk or is there some other new sub genre I'm unaware of...
I mean the VU was the original noise rock band...

My problem isnt in the quality of his guitar playing, but rather the derivative, blues rock style in which he plays...

Panties in a wad so much that you have to resort to this? Nice.
I guess unpopular opinions are not acceptable despite the thread title.

quote:Like The Residents would be a good example. I can't give you many other examples because I don't listen to it. Early Sonic Youth would probably apply. This other board I frequent has long threads with a bunch of this shite and it's fricking awful. I'm sorry, just dissonant noise isn't fricking music.
what band would you call noise rock?

Which brings up another maybe unpopular opinion:
-Sonic Youth doesn't really do it for me. I tried to like them. I really did. Just don't really like it that much.

This is accurate. I'm an admitted Clapton fanboy, though.

-Sonic Youth is pretty meh to me too
-My Morning Jacket is not my thing. I like a few songs, but they make me change my dial when they pop up on Jam_on
-Bluegrass is the shite
-Adele is terrible and I'm glad her 15 minutes of fame are up.
-Bun B > Pimp C

I get that noise rock isn't for everyone... but it is fricking awesome IMO!!
So many bands that fall in to that category though, some more melodic than others...
I will say, I cant get into straight noise with no song structure or melody...
But god, they are the best live shows... listening to my live Unwound vinyl right now...
edit: not familiar with the residents

Among many others. I still love Zep's music, while understanding that they were scumbags of the highest order.

I love his studio ish, but who needs that shite when you have this:

In the end, no matter the genre, music has to be melodic/catchy to some extent for me to like it. I like plenty of stuff that isn't poppy or for mass consumption, but it has to have some of that catchy appeal.
Some progressive rock, extreme folk, a ton of EDM, all lack that IMO. Hence, I respect Jurado, or Steve Vai, but I don't enjoy them.
Oh, and I dislike most Prince and Michael Jackson and don't understand how people really get into either.
Anything too banal or formulaic bores me too. Hence I don't really like American Aquarium, even though they're squarely in my favorite genre.
