Haul Away, from the Privateering album, and I looked around for the right lyrics and came across this discussion, you have to scroll to the bottom of the page.. LINK

My interpretation is that he killed the other sailor, to steal the gold ring off his hand, to give to his woman, and the song is just him thinking about what he's done. Then after reading these other people's thoughts, none of them thought the same thing as I do. I thought it was pretty straight forward. What do yall think?

He’s the GOAT songwriter. Prairie Wedding should be a film.

, Yeah that's another one, he writes such great songs about people, present or past, that are all kind of outside of the norm. He had at least a couple of songs where it's a carny type guy or gypsy. Then others where he is a scoundrel or a roman soldier, and he puts them together so well.

Who else would write a song about Mason and Dixon?

He comes up with some off the wall subject matter. Boom Like That is about the founder of McDonald's. Done with Bonaparte is about a soldier in Le Grande Armee on his way back from Russia.

he used to tour with a komet amp on stage (don't know if he still does), which is hand made in baton rouge.

Go look on YT for the video where he explains the song Sailing to Philadelphia.
Quite interesting, as he has a fellow countryman connection to Jeremiah Dixon.

And yes, as already stated, he is a great songwriter.

Nawh...

men don't marry a wife with a ring made for a man.

And there's many other options than those listed there. For instance the singing sailor make now be happily heading home after deep six'n his wife's lover.... maybe an adulterous friend.... this always cold fellow now laying alone.

Or maybe these two were more than man friends should be... if one is married... and the other perhaps loquacious.... so perhaps the heavy ring a weight.

They don't these days, but since it's a song about something that might have happened 300+ years ago, when any bit of gold would be a treasure, and it is on an album named "Privateering" with a lot of songs about people who are a bit sleazy, I'm pretty sure I'm right. If he had a big gold ring, he would be able to get it sized down, if it was an issue. For a poor sailor on a ship in those days, a big gold ring would be hard to come by.

Which is what a talented song writer does.

He makes each song personal and mean something to all manner of very different people... so no I don't buy any one interpretation as fact unless told by the writer. Which is why I differed from your must be explanation. And offered a couple other possible story lines.

To me, the fact that he is such a good songwriter, is what makes me sure of the meaning. There's no reason to mention something material, such as a gold ring, In the context of a song about true love and death/murder of a shipmate/rival. I think it would be the last thing a guy would think about, unless it's a key part of the story.
If that big ring will help him win the girl though, it does become a big part of the story, and he's telling the story without having to come right out and say what he did. That's my take.

cool

However that still doesn't automatically make his meaning any more your way, than one of my ways, nor lessen the correctness of than all those other people you were silly fufuing. It's the beauty of song writing and why implying your narrow (really unimaginative) take made me reply nawh to your absolute opinion.

The truly "unimaginative" are the ones who don't get it, and have to reach for other interpretations that aren't even hinted at in the lyrics.
If the other sailor had been a rival of his, he would have hinted at that, instead of wasting a line on something irrelevant as a ring. Mark Knopfler doesn't waste words or use unnecessary ones.

Edit to add: There some songwriters who leave songs open to interpretation, they write that way on purpose. Knopfler isn't one of those, his songs always have a clear meaning that isn't hard to catch, if you follow sarcasm and irony at all.
