Maybe you know this - maybe you don't - but legendary drummer Jim Gordon (drummer for Derek and the Dominoes, played drums during many legendary sessions, including Steely Dan's Pretzel Logic album, toured with Traffic, played for Joe Cocker) played the piano on Layla. It was an extemporaneous piece he was playing in the studio when Clapton heard it - was so impressed by his drummer's composition, he incorporated it into the song, thus Gordon's co-writing credit.

Jim Gordon was an undiagnosed (and therefore untreated) schizophrenic, probably from his teenage years. He killed his mother in 1983 and been in prison/mental institutions since.

Really sad and makes the piano coda even more sad with the passage of time.
