People around when the Stones were the Stones- explain it to me

I love some of it, let it bleed is my fav, but It seems very much like the counter-culture they represent far overshadows what they did musically. Is that why people are obsessed? Their music will never make me fanatical about them like many seem to be. Whats the deal? I'll hang up and listen.

PS I love drop d tuning and telecasters, so technically I should love them.

i don't know if it can be explained. I grew up listening to the stones. I've always loved their "pre disco" stuff. I kinda moved away from them starting when they released some girls.
Tumbling Dice
Satisfaction
Honky Tonk Woman
Brown Sugar
I love the early stones sound.

They were the first rock n roll band and most influential band in history (since the Beatles)

You can't underestimate what one single song—"Satisfaction"—did for pop music ... and the Stones. They were just the Beatles' rival up to that point, but when "Satisfaction" came out they created their own space as The Band with a Bad Attitude and Dangerous Ideas about life in general. This angry, alienated attitude appealed to lots of white kids who wanted something nastier than the Mop Tops ... and the Stones were it. Theirs was the music that soundtracked Viet Nam, Altamont, the Manson Family, Watergate—the dark underside of the hippie 60's.
Nearly 50 years later, it's no exaggeration to say the Stones and "Satisfaction" spawned punk, metal, grunge—any rough, angry music that speaks to disaffected white kids. That's a helluva legacy for one band, one song.

For me the Mick Taylor era from '69 to '74 was clearly their apex and best work. That's-
Let It Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Exile on Main St
Goat's Head Soup
It's Only Rock n Roll
That run was HOF standard. Before they had pop and psychedelia that were good but not defining. After was the dark disco era. From there it was more name than substance. Some occasional flashes of old glory but more just old guys on fumes collecting checks.

I really like Their Satanic Majesties Request and Beggars Banquet - sympathy for the devil, and street fighting man are two of my favorite tunes, plus it was the last album that brian jones played on.
there late 70s stuff on gets progressively worse.
I wish the stones had more love in my friend group. Led zep, floyd, doors, beatles all have lots of love, but stones and david bowie get no love.

I was around when the Stones were the Stones, and I really think they appealed to people as the anti-Beatles. They had a much more raw edge to them, and Mick strutting around the stage brought more excitement to their shows. I have been a Stones fan since the mid-60s when I first heard them. It was a different time in America then, and if you weren't there, it may be difficult to understand where that generation was coming from. We were rebelling from a totally straight-laced, children-should-be-seen-and-not-heard upbringing by old-school parents.
This photo was taken a couple weeks after I saw them at the Cotton Bowl in 1975 in the same tour. Billy Preston was with them, and it was a great concert with Woody, Mick, Bill, Keith, and Charlie. They played for about 3-1/2 hours, but only after The Eagles, Montrose, and Trapeze put on a great concert in their own right. The stadium was packed, and it was well over 100 degrees on the Cotton Bowl field. I was about 100 feet from the stage, and we passed around water bottles and doobs all day! A great time was had by all.

Musically, I think the Stones are good, but I agree with your statement that the counter-culture they represent far overshadows their music.
That said, "Beast of Burden" just might be my favorite song of all time.

I'm in my early 30s. The Stones haven't written a decent song in my lifetime.
But a man can like older songs from time to time.
