If that song came out today how much crap would they get over the "police and n*****s " lyric?

None. It just wouldn't get radio play. In this day and age it would look like a desperate attempt to seem edgy and controversial.

What I always found interesting in regards to that song and the racial stuff is that Slash is half black

Don't forget about the "immigrants and fa&&ots" line.
That wouldn't go over very well either.

Well, since he's singing the song from the POV of a fictional character and merely voicing frustration of a stereotypical "small town white boy", perhaps Slash was adult enough to participate in a work of art that provokes a thoughtful discussion beyond the simplistic, "White people? Bad. People of color? Good." - kneejerk, PC, bullshite everyone likes to engage in today.
I mean, do we go back and question just how "pro murder/pro incest" Jim Morrison was? And that's just The End and Riders on the Storm. Or can we just accept the dude (regardless of what you think of him personally or his singing voice) was a great poet/lyricist and just enjoy 2 of their best songs for what they were - works of art?
What am I missing?

LOL, Slash & provoke a thoughtful discussion ? These words don't belong in the same sentence. I'm pretty sure the clowns in GNR were high as frick and just recorded anything they wanted. The only thoughtful discussion was who gets the last line of coke/ snort of horse. Remember this was the late 80's and early 90's before all of the kneejerk PC stuff when a few goofballs with bad hair a les paul and some decent tunes could sell a record or two. It seems like a lifetime ago.

I always wonder the same thing every time I listen to that song

It would get rekt. Modern day pussies can't handle these words, regardless of their context and intent

Wasn't it a cover song anyway?

Axl was not a junkie or the usual rock drug fiend. He never was into the hard shite for the most part.

Way more than just decent on AFD.

No kidding; Axl had to explain it a bunch of times over the years. They only got away with it because they sold records and tickets and their label stood behind them.
And I'm confused by some of the earlier comments in this thread. It wasn't written by Slash, who is part black. It was written by Axl about his experiences when he first got to L.A.

Axl's vocals at the end of that song are some of his best ever. The song gets focus for the lyrics but holy shite he was cranking out the pipes on the last chorus.
