I was never a fan of the genre he was considered to be in but he is a perfect example of how great music transcends genre. I had this CD back in the 90s. I found it completely compelling and heartbreaking when I considered the story it told. It is a masterpiece in the world of concept albums, which I am generally fond of.

Superunknown by Soundgarden also came out 30 years ago today. (That’s the one I bought first)

Saw this tour with Manson opening before he got popular. Great show.
I still prefer Broken, by a hair.

I never got into NIN until 10 years after this album came out. I wasn't into super heavy stuff and I had a hard time getting into industrial rock. But the downward spiral was such a huge album when it came out and even years later, it was constantly a topic of conversion when talking about music...particularly music our parents did not want us listening to.
Something clicked in 2005. I think it was when With_Teeth came out, which was much more accessible for a non-NIN fan. I loved that album, then tried The Fragile, and grew to love that one too. Now I am a huge fan of all Reznor's stuff through Year Zero.
I wish he'd get back to touring. I haven't seen them since 2005 Voodoo Fest after Katrina, which was EPIC. QOTSA and NIN back to back.

Saw him a few times back in the day.
Playing Hurt in front of those horrific images, basically a condemnation of mankind, is still chilling.

Wow!! One of the best songs ever written
I’m embarrassed and saddened to admit that I have never seen them live when my brother has seen them probably over 50 times.(no lie) Sucks to think they may never tour again. I wish I would have seen them during the 90’s.

I bet they tour again - shoot, they toured a couple of years ago. Trent Reznor made a social media post today about the album's anniversary and closed it with "Hope to see you soon".

And as good as that is, and it's very good, it's not even in the same realm as Johnny Cash's cover. Even Trent knew it.

at that point (Hurt) became Cash’s swan song. After watching it (the video), Reznor said: “That song isn’t mine any more.”

Nah!! The original is Supreme.
Cash’s is great too.
People say things sometimes in the moment. I kinda don’t think he meant it was cash’s song now.
It will definitely always be Reznors song but his fans can love it through Cash’s version now too that’s probably what he meant.

Who saw the Broken video back in the day when it was a VHS that was copied and traded by word of mouth? My neighbor had it and I distinctly remembering him showing it to us. It freaked me the hell out! Probably one of the reasons I never gave NIN a chance until 10 years later.

Yeah. Cash’s version is beloved only because he humanized the song. His vocals set to the music don’t really work for me. Too incongruous.
That said, dat “March of Pigs” drumbeat. :pimp

Trent’s music has such
a sunny, upbeat vibe.
When he was working out at the Reilly Center, he was an affable, friendly and normal dude. Not surprising, really.
