Picked up a 2018 reimagined D28 in ambertone today just outside of Chicago.

Sound is a little small for my taste so going to replace the light strings with Martin mediums.

Beautiful guitar. Hopefully it’ll grow on you.
D 28 is on my “list” of guitars to one day own.
Bought a 000 -15 SM in January that I can’t put down, so the D 28 will hopefully come later.
Enjoy your D 28!

New strings will definitely help.

The previous owner also told me he rarely played it because he was afraid of scratching it so it probably needs to be broken in a bit.

Nice.

I like that it's got forward shifted bracing and the HP neck. G'luck with the strings it can take a couple tries to get what you're after.

Sound is a little small for my taste so going to replace the light strings with Martin mediums.

Before you make the jump to mediums, are you using 80/20s or phosphor bronze alloy? If you are using the former, shift to the latter. 80/20 has more of an inherent EQ scoop, where PB has a little more balance and a subsequent warmth. And for biggest, fullest tone, don't use coated strings.

Unless one plays truly acoustic with unamplified quartets in churches or theaters, I recommend sticking with a bigger sounding light gauge string versus a medium gauge. Mediums are significantly more string tension and expedite the compromise of a guitar's structural integrity.

I have a babied 25-year old HD28 in my shop right now that's in dire need of what I'd consider a premature neck reset solely because its owner used mediums. I see a similar arrival with a similar story at least monthly.

Do what you wish, just food for thought.

I was going to try medium Lifespan Martin phosphor bronze strings because that's what comes stock on the guitar.

What string brand/style would you recommend? My style is usually like old country and bluegrass types of music with a flatpick.

I thought Martins ship with 12s. Maybe I stand corrected, as in "many" Martins ahaha.

My favorite acoustic strings are D'Addario Phosphor Bronze. Sound and feel superb, affordable and readily available. EJ16 is the 12-53 set, EJ26 is their 11-52, which is what I use on my acoustics. EJ17 is the 13 set (medium)

If you lean to coated strings, their new XS series is really good.

And D'Addario EJ-19's are light tops and medium bottoms

String Gauge Tension
E --- 0.012 - 23.36 lbs.
B --- 0.016 - 23.31
G --- 0.025 - 32.81
D --- 0.035 - 35.87
A --- 0.045 - 32.77
E --- 0.056 - 27.75

as opposed to lights - EJ16's

String Gauge Tension
E --- 0.012 - 23.36 lbs
B --- 0.016 - 23.31
G --- 0.024 - 30.06
D --- 0.032 - 29.93
A --- 0.042 - 28.93
E --- 0.053 - 24.95

...or 160.54 lbs tension compared to 175.87 which is close to 10% more but still less than full on mediums

I use these on a couple; however I also use the lights (16's) on a couple, and one with full on mediums but it just needs them. Also have one with Santa Cruz Parabolic Tension Strings – Low Tension. . . but it's my baby and when you see the cost you'll know why just one. However they're silky smooth and bend like crazy.

Use the heavier strings, but tune down a whole step(from the top DGCFAD). When you play like in the key of A, it will really be G, D will be C, E will be D and so on. You get a really nice fat sound, especially walking notes on the top strings, or you can use a capo at the 2nd fret and play like normal, just make sure to remove the capo when not playing. Try this with the strings you have on it now, and see if you like the sound.

Beautiful guitar. Congrats. How much did she set you back if I may ask?

I gave 2500, its a 2018 but the previous owner barely played in because he was afraid of scratching it.

I didn't find a single ding on it, basically same as new.

Beautiful guitar. You can hardly ever go wrong with a well-maintained Martin.

That said, the shades on the desk gave away your secret identity.
