I love Chicago and Denver, but yeah... I couldn't do the cold. I couldn't even take the cold of DC (and DC has awesome music, too).
Going back to Austin v. the Metroplex, I'll put up the D/FW live music scene as being pretty great, too. I think Austin has better local music just because it has the university, but as far as places to see music? DFW has Gilley's, Billy Bob's, the Granada, Trees, and hundreds of other great venues. It's got just as good as a setup to see live music (though Austin clearly has the edge on festivals -- I'm going there this weekend for FFF).
But since a good portion of Dallas is too ritzy to care about live music, its kind of allowed to do its own thing and grow organically. The benign neglect helps the scene, as opposed to Austin's rampant and oppressive boosterism.

Austin was so much fun to go to back in the 90s, I havent been since the first two ACLs (2001&2002??)... It had even changed then...
I always hear it is just way overgrown now... I guess its all relative...
i'm sure there are places in Dallas that are great to be, but man I have it up there as my single most hated big city in America... granted, I have only been 3 times...

How about Asheville? Good music scene, amazing mountains/scenery, great culture - it's like the Boulder of the South.

As for the music it would be Austin. Music industry in Nashville has gone too commercial.

yo dawg, No one wants to live in Dallas. It's a notch below Oklahoma city and the people fricking suck. I'd honestly rather live in Houston or San Antonio for live music. Austin is by far the best city in Texas and it's not even close

to move? either would be good options - id guess your career path would likely make a better tie breaker than a small gap in the music scene. both clear any minimums i would have on that front

Yeah, it can't take the growth. Too many yuppies moving in and pricing out the freaks. My sister-in-law, who is pretty damn hippie, is fed up and leaving Austin when her lease is up. It's just not the same town it was even five years ago. It's had explosive growth.

The downtown area sucks balls and there's a huge contingent of the most obnoxious bleach blond bimbos and overgrown frat boys. There's downright offensive conspicuous consumption as well. I'm not denying any of that, and it's also the face Dallas gives the world.
But that kind of city lends itself to a spectacularly vibrant underbelly. You need a decaying false front for the angry punks to rebel against. And that is the Dallas that I think is f'n awesome. It's also not on the brochures and takes living here to find.
It's too easy to be "alternative" in Austin or Boulder. That's what makes their art soft. You need a place where it's kind of hard, and there's something to rebel against.

There are plenty of jobs here. All kinds. Sure, a lot of people are in the service industry, but a lot of those people are artists, musicians, etc. The creative types like service industry jobs because the hours are awesome and super flexible. There are tons of people with regular ol' jobs too, though, and lots of self-employed folks.
