Lady Gaga is the best non-operatic vocalist since Ronstadt.
While I don't think she is quite as good as LR, Gaga can sing well across a variety genres. Most "big voiced" stars can't do that (Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Adele, to name a few).
For example, Carrie Underwood would do well on Broadway, but I don't think she could do Jazz or Standards (Gaga and LR have mastered those genres). As much as I love Adele, I think she is only fit for pop music and some blues.
Also, I think a criminally underrated talent is Jennifer Hudson. Girl can sang.

I would argue that Whitney never had full control of her voice. By the time she was physically mature enough to be able to truly understand and manipulate the gift she had, she was a crack fiend.

Even though she doesn't always choose the best songs to record, I think Kelly Clarkson's voice is excellent.
As far as voices I love, but I'm not sure how great their range is, Bonnie Raitt ranks pretty high for me, as well as Susan Tedeschi and Gillian Welch (all mentioned by other posters). And Aretha gets my Respect!
