Same here.

Grizzly Bear. I'm not sure they had heaps of acclaim though.

Damn Radiohead is very listenable, almost poppy is some cases.

I think the problem here is that non-music snobs have a less developed ear

Well that may be true as well

There are some bands that people gush over, and I just don't get it

Everybody has that experience sometimes. But for every album that is gushed over, probably 65-70% of the time I'm going to at least "like" it.

I agree with what you are saying. I think at the root of it it comes down to your musical taste. I enjoy all music. I understand people thinking Radiohead and Bon Iver are non-listenable even after a few tries and just because it's listed in the top ten albums of that decade does not necessarily mean you should like it because critics say you should. A perfect example for me is It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back by Public Enemy. I listened to it. There are obviously a ton more but that one I thought was just crap. Critically acclaimed rap album and I like rap. Maybe just not growing up in the time has a part to do with it. My two cents.

I mean nobody agrees with the critical "consensus" all of the time unless they are a pretentious douche. Everyone has things they think are over or underrated. But generally speaking as I said generally speaking I at least "like" an acclaimed album 2 out of 3 times. I don't think anyone is any higher than that.

Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
Sleater Kinney - Dig Me Out

Though I do admit that a lot of recently praised albums by the "hipster" press have been boring as hell. Animal Collective, Bon Iver, Wye Oak, even Broken Social Scene... they release some boring arse albums. (BSS is actually great live, but their studio stuff drags).

I honestly don't like a majority of music you'll find pitchfork gushing over.

Own this and have listened to it a bunch of times but never been able to "get it" as far as the massive critical acclaim.

But yeah as mentioned before The Clash is the real deal. They were incredible.

As far as other "alt" critical faves from the 80s and 90s that I find extremely listenable- Meat Puppets II, The Replacements Let it Be & Tim & Pleased to Meet Me, Husker Du- Zen Arcade & New Day Rising. Still love Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville. Murmur by REM is great.

I don't listen to a whole lot of newer music so I don't have much of an opinion.

I tend to agree with this. I do like some of the stuff they gush over, but I don't particularly like, say, Animal Collective, and Pitchfork would fellate every member of that band if they had permission.

Radiohead too. I've tried to like Radiohead. But I just don't.

What is the deal with Radiohead? Do you have to be high to like it? If I were more of a pothead would I be into it?

Sometimes I think this is why I don't like/understand jazz music. I actually don't think it is meant to be listened to sober. It can't possibly be.

I find that pitchfork likes the majority of music that I do. But, there are a bunch of things that pitchfork likes that I am lukewarm on. I have been drinking, so hopefully that made sense.
