The Dismemberment Plan- Emergency and I
I haven't quite heard anything else like it since.

Would be my pick, but I don't know if I call that underrated
One of my all time favorites.

Yeah, I guess it depends on the definition of "underrated". It is definitely critically acclaimed and has some hardcore fans. On the other hand, I rarely hear people talk about it. Maybe overlooked, instead of underrated.

SO many albums in this thread fit this description. Seems like this thread is done often...

I love the Plan, but that would be like listing Neutral Milk Hotel or Pavement. Those albums are plenty rated.
I think Jawbreaker's Dear You is a great call, as it was derided as a sell out at the time, but it holds up really well. I mean, it's not Unfun, but what is?
Archers of Loaf or Mudhoney are my go to on these questions, but let's try a new one that no one will advocate for: The Queers' Love Songs for the Retarded. It's the best pop punk Ramones rip off ever, and gleefully offensive. It's also catchy as hell.

See I don't feel it gets near as much run as NHM or Pavement. On acclaimed music (which aggregates a bunch of critic ratings/list), In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Slanted and Enchanted, Crooked Rain are all top 50 of the 90s, top 250 all-time. Emergency and I isn't even top 100 of the 90s or top 700 all-time. Plus I feel like I see a lot more talk of NHM and Pavement on this board than the Plan.
