I vote the Ramones although Pet Sounds might be the most influential album of all time.

I prefer the Ramones but it's obvious they were influenced by The Beach Boys

pretty much sums it up, regarding those two...

The general debate is not valid, without the inclusion of the Velvet Underground and MC5

Beach Boys. However, using the word band limits a lot of American acts as they were essentially solo w/ backing band: Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Sly Stone, Frank Zappa, Marvin Gay, James Brown. Some other influential bands: REM, Eagles, Allman Brothers, Nirvana, Husker Du, Talking Heads, Velvet Underground, Funkadelic, The Stooges, Pixies.

The most influential American band of all time, and the second most influential band in history, is The Byrds

Their impact has been enormous, in folk rock and psychedelia through country rock and power pop, into alt.country and Americana today, fifty years later

They kept the market for tiedyed clothing alive, and I think they had at least one or two songs a average person might recognize.

I hate to break it to you but the average person isn't going to know much about the beach boys or the ramones or velvet underground either.

Milton Friedman couldn't do a better job explaining a free market at work than the parking lot at a Dead show did.

They also pioneered modern concert sound systems, light shows, and let their music be traded freely to create a larger audience who would financially support the band through touring instead of getting radio time and selling records 50 years ago. The music isn’t for everyone but their influence on music and the music industry is hard to deny.

Funkadelic is highly underrated in their level of influence.
