Been a fan for a long long time but hardwired has some badass riffs and chugs from James and Kirk that seem to be drowned out by Lars' loud shitty drum playing. On spit out the bone the riffs are lost behind the drums to me. Its such a good riff! The guitars need to be louder and drums toned down. I know each of their albums are produced differently for a sound they are trying to achieve or whatever, but like with Black album, no one overshadowed each other. We wont get into AJFA lol.

Its neat to listed to what people have done on youtube with "if spit out the bone was on AJFA" or MOP, Atlas rise is another one that sounds so much better with how they produced in their earlier days.

My favorite YouTube vid is AJFA without the bass pretty much muted out. It sounds so much better.

You can thank Lars for that crap.

The only album of their's with bad production is St Anger.

Wait. You don’t think Justice had poor production? Yikes.

The snare drum sound on St. Anger was just horrible. Death Magnetic had a strange mix in some parts. I actually love the production on Justice.

If you want to see the true power that was 80's Metallica watch the Live shite Binge & Purge Seattle 1989 show. It is all over YouTube. They were not a band. They were a machine.

I've heard the And Justice for Jason version and its not much different. Bass is easily the least important instrument in thrash, with Metallica's first few albums with Cliff being the exception.

I don’t necessarily disagree with any of that but even the bass guitar shenanigans aside it just sounds to me kind of like you’re listening to it inside of a tin can. I LOVE the music on it. Might be my favorite album of theirs wrt the collection of songs. Just never been a fan of the production.

Production wasn't the only problem with that album.

I may get some flack for this, but I believe Metallica’s been lost in the woods production wise since parting ways with Bob Rock. Say what you will about the musical direction of their self-titled album and the Load records, but you can’t deny that they sounded fantastic. Every instrument shined, even the bass. I haven’t enjoyed the band’s work nearly as much since Rock’s absence. Even the songs’ structures have suffered since his departure. Transitions come out of the blue, solos get sloppy...

Guess I'm in the minority, but I think Death Magnetic rocks and I rate Hardwired a 8 out of 10. Both albums are underrated.

They’re not bad records by any means. What gets me is that Metallica claimed to have evolved during the Load era, stating that when a band becomes stagnant or lives in the past, it essentially dies. Then they “returned to their roots” with the albums you mentioned and nearly erased the Loads from history. That feels more like a business decision or a “sellout” than the Load phase did, in my view. I still love the band, but I miss when they weren’t afraid to experiment and take chances.

I like death magnetic and hardwired. they are good albums, im just saying that the production is lacking. Like I said, the drums seem to overpower the guitars and the riffs. Lars is way to shitty of a drummer for that to work

Lars had too much power, this is what happens when a drummer gets uppity.

Most producers would record them first and then kick them out after completing their takes.

This is the absolute truth, SEClint. You can watch Ulrich wrestle control of the band from Hetfield in real-time in "Some Kind of Monster" after James returns from rehab. Hetfield came back to the studio kinder and gentler and Lars seized the opportunity. The drums have ruled the mix ever since.

While Ulrich's business instincts have made the band millionaires many times over, I still see Hetfield as far-and-away the band's MVP. No Hetfield, no Metallica. I can't say that about the other three members.

Lars started the band and has a bunch of songwriting credits.

..I get he started the band,..but there is an obvious talent gap for songwriting when you're comparing Lars, James, Cliff, Dave and Kirk.

Lars isn't what made metallica be metallica

James is obviously the song writing genius of the group. I don't know what Lars contributes but he has way more credits than Kirk or anyone else in the band.
