I’ve followed the band closely for nearly thirty years and from what I’ve read and seen, Lars’ contributions come mainly through arranging the songs and their structures.
I like Lars and respect him majorly. I wish Hetfield did more to steer the band but can’t fault Lars for taking the lead when Hetfield’s demons became a distraction.
It’s Hetfield who’s most responsible for driving ex-bassist Jason Newsted from the band, sadly. I still haven’t fully gotten over that.

Thats Lars' main contribution to the band. He really does have a good ear and grasp of song structure. Without him Sandman wouldnt be what it is. He suggested playing the front part of the rift 3 times then the tail. James is the true force behind Metallica no doubt. Lars keeps the money flowing and James keeps the music flowing.
I wish Jason was still with the band as well. I like Rob but they seemed to be better with Jason. I know things had probably gotten stale with Bob Rock but production wise, the albums are some of the best sounding albums albeit a far departure from previous records. Load and reload were sprinkled with great songs but had some shite filler songs too.

Agreed death magnetic is very underrated. All nightmare long and the end of the line are great tracks
