Manship Theater/Shaw Center Does a Terrible Job Advertising Its Upcoming Musical Acts

In 2014, Grammy Nominated jazz singer Jane Monheit played 2 shows at the Manship Theater. I don't know how I managed to discover the event, but I ended up with two front row center tickets for the 900 show. Manship theater has less than 400 seats, and I don't think either show was sold out. It's a crying shame, and she'll probably never come back to BR. I was embarrassed. On the plus side, I get her autograph and my picture taken with her. She looked at me like I was some creepy perv (which I am), but I don't care.

I just found out two days ago, while searching for ticket info on another artist who is appearing at the Manship Theater (I found out about this on HER facebook page), that ARTURO SANDOVAL is playing the Manship Theater in January. He is one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time, and probably the greatest alive (sorry Wynton...) today. Managed to snag two tix. Probably less than 50 left. WTF is up with these people?

I was front row watching Lindsey Buckingham in 2012. Even did the meet and greet after the show. Epic night

Manahip theatre is 325 seats

As far as promoting what could they do better marketing their shows? Specifically I mean.

I'll be front row for the James McMurtry show tonight. I found out about the show through the Red Dragon Listening Room's facebook page.

Well, at minimum, they could send out emails each time an act is booked, and a periodic email listing upcoming shows. I have purchased tickets to a few shows there, they have my email, but I don't get any notifications.

The two acts I'm seeing soon should be able to sell 335 seats rather easily, even in Baton Rouge.

Arturo Sandoval is as good as they get. Hell, there's been a movie made about him, starring Andy Garcia For Love or Country.

Margo Price is part of the retro-country trend that includes Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell (I think she's better than both, but that's just my opinion). She's been on Saturday Night Live, has had numerous TV appearances. So it's not like she's an unknown up and comer. She's here.

I'm not in advertising, so I don't know what they could do better, but good and diverse artists like these will not come to Baton Rouge if they can't get local/venue support to sell out a 335 seat arena.

Two weeks out from the Margo Price concert and there are still seats left.

I have yet to see an ad or a billboard or a hear a radio spot.

Disgraceful.

Margo Price
Is a buzz act featured at this year's Birmingham's Sloss Fest.

As for here in BTR, exactly *where* would they advertize such hip acts? Tells you something, eh?

Those LED billboards, posters in all of the “hip” downtown bars, radio spots on WRKF. I don’t think they could advertise on “country” radio because she’s a liberal and is also blackballed by the Country Music Machine in Nashville , like Sturgill and Isbell.

There have got to be 335 people in BR who would pay $30 to see Margo Price.

So OP thinks they should do a $2000 billboard to sell 20 $30 seats? Got it

No.

I think they should spend a modicum of money to sell 325 +/- seats.

I'm not suggesting a media blitz, but a few emails to previous customers, strategic radio spots, and some print and electronic billboard advertising.

Absolutely agree about the emails. Radio spots may not work because of the variety of artists. There aren't many places to advertise jazz and alt-country artists.

Their best bet is a strong social media presence. Make sure they are included in the Advocate's calendar. Also, make sure their events are included on sites like bandsintown and pollstar. They can use that to spread word of mouth.

Almost all of those musical shows are sponsored in full by their donors no need to waste the money on advertising. Plus a lot of the season ticket holders just don't go, especially if it's not an artist they particularly like.

I actually made a Twitter list for places like Manship, The Joy, One Eyed Jack's, the Civic and a few others. I would always find out comedians were in town the week after they left so that seems the best way for me to keep up.
