Let's talk Piper at the Gates of Dawn

Critics seems to love it.
Is it the work of a mad genius or bunch of overrated nursery rhymes??
I used to love playing it in my car with passengers and seeing the incredulous look on people's faces when I told them it was the work of Pink Floyd.

The word "genius" gets thrown around too much when describing artists.
Syd Barrett was most definitely a genius. A "mad genius" as well. Roger Waters wrote the songs Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Wish You Were Here in tribute to Syd.

Why can't it be both?
I like the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, for example, but I don't get why the critics and other musicians fawn over it.
What I recognize is that I started paying attention to Floyd because of The Wall (just because of my age) - and I went backwards through the catalogue from there - if I was a fan the whole time, I would have wondered how the band got from PATGOD to The Final Cut - likewise, I listen to DSOM and wonder how 6 years earlier and 1 significant personnel change could account for the vast difference in the 2 albums.
Just for my money, I listen to the "Big Three", plus the Final Cut, and occasionally the singles from Division Bell and MLOR - the early Floyd stuff, while I admit are influential, aren't my cup of tea - but that's true of most (but not all) of the psychedelic stuff.

I just don't get the Syd is a genius thing, I guess that adds to the narrative because of what happened to him, which was tragic.
I came of age during Animals and reached back and for my money, Pompeii-Darkside-Wish You Were Here-Animals has got to be the most impressive run of quality music ever.

I don't ignore the first 6 studio albums by Led Zeppelin, or the Beatles (who only existed for 6 1/2 years or so), but I completely get what you're saying here. I can't name 1 track from Meddle without looking it up (okay, maybe Echoes?) - and likewise for Obscured by Clouds. But "The Big Three" (DSOM, WYWH, and The Wall), plus Animals and The Final Cut - I traditionally listen to the entire album, start to finish, as they intended - and those were 5 consecutive album releases, although Final Cut was written to be a Waters solo album.
And I don't dislike the 2 post-Waters albums, but they're just not consistently as good as the 5 above.

Piper is a great album.
And Syd's three solo albums that he released post-Floyd are every bit as good and creepy as Piper. Check them out.

There are a couple of songs off it that I'm not crazy about but overall, I like it.

I love this album. Interstellar, bike, lucifer sam, astronomy domine. For long time it was my favorite pink floyd album. I think animals is my current favorite.

Same. When I first got into Floyd, I didn't really care for Piper. After some time passed, it grew on me a ton. It really is a good psychedelic album. It might be one of my favorite Floyd albums.

Whats an album? I hear ya man, and I think Pink Floyd nailed the "concept album", every song was a piece of the whole.

I could have written this myself
Like you I first really heard of Floyd with the Wall. It was a few years later that I heard DSOTM all the way thru and was blown away. I bought it the very next day and listened to that and Wish You Were Here straight thru all the time.

There's a reason Floyd fans don't like this album as a general rule: it's an entirely different band. Barret era Floyd sounds almost nothing like Watters/Gilmour Floyd. There's that rough transition period of Ummagumma and Meddle while they figured that out, eventually becoming the band we all know with Dark Side.
I actually prefer Barret era Floyd just because it is like a little window into going mad. WYWH and Dark Side is witnessing someone else going mad, but Piper is being on the inside of the madness.
And that line on Bike, "You're the kind of girl who fits in with my world..." is so f'n disturbing.

interesting way of putting it. can't say i disagree.
i love 'piper', and i appreciate it more with every year passing. but for that album and 'the wall', i just can't spin 'em at any random time, like i can with the other floyd albums. that's not an attack...i just gotta be dialed in properly to soak in those two albums, 'cuz they're not exactly what i'd call "accessible" works (although by comparison, 'the wall' is light years more accessible than 'piper').
anyone hear the tracks "vegetable man" and "scream thy last scream"? if not, they're two unreleased pink floyd syd-era songs. they're not "essential" songs per se, but they're worth hearing 'cuz they really do capture syd going off the rails....which is why roger & dave will probably never release it in any form.
