So the story was they didn’t realize he had cancer until just before he died. How was that possible? Anyone following Motorhead could see he was rapidly weakening in the last year or more. Also I seem to remember him saying they were routinely given physicals before tours so how could such advanced cancer be missed?

I remember reading that a morphine kit was delivered to him at the end for pain and afterwards he almost immediately checked out. He was always anti heroin, but I have always wondered if he decided to leave on his own terms with an intentional OD once the kit arrived (my speculation only and I am not judging him).

Hell of a rocker. Performed til the end.

Routine physical isn't going to catch all cancers. Some people don't have cancer markers in their blood and tests like a colonoscopy etc are needed. Don't skip your your colonoscopy. The key to cancer is early detection.

I have NEVER understood the appeal of Lemmy and Motorhead. His vocals suck.

I read that he drank a fifth of Jack, daily, for decades. He made it to 70, outlived his expectancy considering the lifestyle he had lived. I'm sure there's a grey area there after living such a lifestyle for so long and you're at an age where it's finally catching up and things would start falling apart anyways. It's not "I'm going to kill myself" but "I'm going to feel better and if I do accidentally kill myself in the process, oh well frick it."

I've read that too but I've also read that while he obviously liked his Jack and Cokes he was a lot more moderate than his image portrayed.

On one of the docs about Motorhead his bass tech said that it was hard to be Lemmy because he had to ‘keep up that Lemny character all the time’ which I found interesting.

Made me think that sometimes he got tired of it.

He also warned people not to do coke but to do meth instead because it was better for you

LEMMY will live forever . He was a roadie ,then a guitar tech for early Hawkwind and ended up being in Hawkwind before spinning off to form Motorhead . Yes , his vocals have to grow on some but really what would Motorhead sound like with some high pitch voice?? Lemmy was the perfect fit for that . Ive seen a few of the great 3 some bands ...Rush,Triumph to name a couple . AWESOME live shows BUT they cant top what i saw from Lemmy ,Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee one time . The most powerful rock/metal experience by far in my lifetime . Couldnt hear for 2 days after that show

I read about Lemmy cutting a track for an album he was guesting on, where he asked his driver to stop and get a 2 liter bottle of coke and a fifth of Jack. He dumped half the coke out and filled the bottle with Jack, sipped on it while recording.

At the end when he started to get sick, one of his friends said he switched from Jack and Coke to Vodka and orange juice because it was a healthier option.

Not to pile on old Lem, but Motorhead’s most commercially designed album ‘March Or Die’ featured a song that was surely earmarked to be the hit and neither Motorhead guitarists played on the song (Slash handled the guitar work). I wonder what that conversation was like.

To be fair, that was the song he did with Ozzy so it wasn't just a Motorhead song to begin with. I see your point, but having someone outside the band already on it does make it a little different than he just went out to get Slash to do the guitars and left everyone else off.

That’s a good point.

There a documentary I watched in the last few years about him that was cool. I can’t begin to remember the name. One piece I remember was they were on tour and Lemmy was essentially wearing daisy dukes. Someone finally had the nerve to ask him what the deal was and she told them bc it is fricking hot.

Anyone who doesn’t like Lemmy never saw Motörhead live.

Saw them only once, but that guy has pure stage presence and they hit like a semi. He posted on the outside of the venue that anyone who wanted to could join Lemmy for a drink before the show. I was too young.

I saw a documentary about him. He lived in a very small, old apartment in LA. His wealth did not seem to equal his fame. He liked to hang out at a bar and play video games. Really kind of a boring life off stage.

I know the documentary you're talking about and I can't remember where it was originally, I want to say the old Fuse channel? But anyway I'm going to find it and watch it again, great music doc

Going in for bloodwork for diabetes isn't going to pick up prostate cancer, but who knows if that's even what killed him or just something he had along with everything else.

I think he mostly died of wearing a hole in the firewall.

Concert tours have to carry insurance to protect those that have vested interests in the tour, who will lose money if the tour has to be canceled if one of the band members is sick or dies. The physical was probably for insurance purposes and not likely to be very through. Fleetwood Mac once had trouble getting a tour insured because Stevie Nicks was so overweight.
