I wouldn't say that review is a fail; Radiohead sucks balls. "Overwrought, pompous music" is a perfect description. My entries in this category would be every Rolling Stone music critic that slagged Zeppelin and RUSH.

Seattle Daily Times writer Patrick MacDonald
May 25, 1974
"I hope the four guys who make up the group, whose names don't matter, are putting money away for the future, the near future," MacDonald decreed. "Because Kiss won't be around long."

Found the contender for the "Let's Post Epic TDMB Fails of the Past"

He said they would be "one hit wonders." They've been one of the biggest rock acts in the world for well over 20 years. It's fine if you don't like them, of course, but you can still be objective and say that review is laughable when reading it today.
Lots of shitty bands are popular. Radiohead still sucks.

That is a question of taste and is not what we are talking about, unless you saying that Radiohead is a one hit wonder…which is blatantly false.

Radiohead's highest charting hit peaked at number 34 on Billboard. So they had zero hits.

I don't think it's a fail. The only fail is "Suggest they'll be more than one hit wonders."
Melodies are tuneful enough but too self-absorbed to be catchy is a spot on analysis of Radiohead. But that description is exactly what got them the die hard fans.
The guy in the article sounds like he wanted them to be be catchy little rockers instead of the pompous avant-garde artists they are. It seems the latter worked out for them and the fans.

And RUSH's peaked at 21 using the same methodology.

Name another "one hit wonder" that is selling out arenas instantly for every show, 25+ years after their first "hit"? You are simply gaslighting at this point for the sake of winning an argument.

Radiohead is awful imo. I know they have a cult following, but i could never understand it

They aren't a "one hit wonder." They never had one. Creep is a great song. It didn't come close to being a hit. Much like The Black Keys, Radiohead is overwrought, pretentious hipster douche music for pretentious hipster douches. They both suck.

Then what is your point? I agree with you, which is why I said that the review in the OP was a fail.
I don't really care to argue about what one considers is "good music." It's a fool's errand.

Grateful Dead/whatever iteration they tour under now

One critic called Jimmy Buffet "the first of the sucking chest wound singers"

Apparently they are also no hit wonders and therfore music critics of the 70s who shite on them were justified.
