I just listened to that for the first time. Wow.

First you snicker, because the first verse kind of feels like a parody.

By the end? Blown away. Darker than the original Metallica song and that was quite a feat.

From the Soundgarden stuff, my favorite is Fell on Black Days.

Poignant in light of the way he went out. A true genius of the last quarter century of rock music. RIP.

This one gets lost in his shuffle, but it is a damn good tune...

The 90's were a very dark time for music. Grunge, sludgy music, goatees, plaid baggy shirts, beginnings of opiod problems ( heroin popularity revival), depressing lyrics ect.

The 90s kinda mirrored the late 60s in that regard.

Rock is at its best when it's the white mans blues, with dark introspective lyrics and heavy rhythms. It kinda works as party music at times but hip hop has taken over that role.

Good one. I was pleasantly surprised when Audioslave came out. Thought they may flop, but it was the opposite.

Audioslave had some good stuff. The Temple of the Dog album was really good. He tried more slower/ballad-type stuff outside of Soundgarden that was good to hear. I'd have to say "Slaves and Bulldozers" from Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger album is the most impressive vocal he ever did. I can't imagine someone else trying to sing that.

Also wanna give a shout out to his solo album Euphoria Morning. Very melodic like Temple of the Dog.

Massive inspiration to me.

Most recently, I loved "The Keeper" but all around, he had so many awesome songs.

The Curse / Show Me How to Live (Audioslave)

His version of Ave Maria was great. When I'm down and Follow my Way from Euphoria Morning.

Fell On Black Days, The Day I Tried to Live, Burden in my Hands...

Dang. Why man.

Just think about that for a moment. Three hugely distinctive voices, all different all very good. I'm not a Nirvana fanboy, but Cobain as well. All had an impact that still is resonates today.

Could only take him in small doses. Much like Myles Kennedy his voice became a little to nasally and shrilly.

That said outshined and room a thousand years wide are damn fine songs.

4 really. We were spoiled. Cornell, Vedder, Staley, Cobain. No particular order. 5 if you count Cantrell harmonies.

I am a total Pearl Jam geek/fanboy so I will stop typing here. Lol

During a long road trip a few years back, I heard Cornell do a set of interviews on XM radio that has stuck with me ever since. I finally found the recording of it and at the 45 minute mark he explains Fell On Black Days. The guy had fricking pure talent.

That being said, I don't recall ever mourning another artist the way I did CC.

Merle Haggard was equal if not worse than CC for me. But I also had tickets for a show scheduled 2 months after Merle died which made it suck even worse.

If I would have been 5 years older at the time if Johnny Cash's death I would have been devastated.
