When I was in HS (late 70s-early 80s), the ones who really loved Floyd were the proto-hipsters and pseudo-intellectuals who liked to do Ludes and get deep in the lyrics. The type who think they're more intellectual and profound than they really are.

Floyd's good but their sound can get monotonous after awhile. Zep is so much better.

Saw them both in the 70s. Both were great. This is not a competition.

When you consider the 1970s in isolation - Zeppelin and the Floyd were the 2 "monsters" - albeit they were clearly 2 different beasts. Ironically named after 2 famous blues men, Pink Floyd wasn't very bluesy at all (although you can certainly hear it if you want to in Gilmour's playing) - while Zeppelin could be downright stanky with it at times.

I'm not going to deny that the songwriting was excellent in both bands. The musical ability of Zeppelin across the board is just flat out better - Gilmour and Wright were virtuoso-level instrumentalists, but when you consider that Zeppelin had Page (call it a push with Gilmour), JPJ (certainly comparable to Wright and had more versatility) - PLUS Bonham. But, the songs of Floyd had a lot more substance. Tolkien notwithstanding, Roger (and I've been critical of him over the years for his overpoliticization, bad manners, assholishness, and not really being much of a singer or bass player) had a lot more to say than Plant did - and that endures.

Zeppelin had a lot more energy. Floyd had a lot more nuance. Zeppelin was the epitome of blues/rock/protometal - Floyd was, in essence, a progressive rock outfit with a lot of range.

And they were the 2 best (commerically promoted, anyway) bands of the 1970s, with all due respect to The Who, The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac.

LZ was a blues cover band

PF had 1000x more depth in songwriting and composition... this shouldn't be news to anyone

Don't see the point of comparing them. They're two very different but awesome bands.

that's like comparing merle haggard to tupac, it's simply not an apples to apples comparison.

Anyone who thinks this is an idiot. I usually stray from blanket generalizations like this but there's no way around it. Syd was in the band for Piper and a few songs on Saucerful. Basically what you're saying is that Piper > all the rest of the PF catalog combined which is beyond retarded. But even taking it a step farther, Piper wasn't even that good. It was absolutely a product of the times, which there's nothing wrong with. It had that meandering, experimental, psychedelic, underground club scene of the late 60s feel to it which was fine, but it's not even in the stratosphere of standing up against their all time classics. See Emily Play is solid and stands the test of time. Arguably the most well-known song from the album, Interstaller Overdrive, is just a winding 10 minute instrumental. Then you have random experiments like Pow R Toch that is just really "out there".

People like to be edgy by saying Floyd was better with Syd, but it isn't based in any reality. To be honest, Floyd was kinda lousy with Syd. It wasn't until they got another "real" musician in Gilmore that they really took off and the rest is history. You might as well say the beatles were better with pete best.

Bluegrass I feel like is a form of country music and it breaks your 3 minute rule pretty frequently.

I liked Led Zeppelin. I know Pink Floyd had good players but they never made it to the playoffs for me.

This isn't true at all

Some forms of music -- 12 bar blues and rockabilly come to mind -- are rather "rigid about form", but country is fairly flexible

I agree with this. Technically, Led Zeppelin moved more units cumulatively than Pink Floyd by a 20 million margin and were bigger sellers within a shorter time span and fewer albums, probably one of the most efficient bands in history. They were also prolific live performers and broke numerous tour records throughout the 70s which Floyd cannot claim. Floyd has their records as well, but edge to Zep.

Amazingly DSOTM spent 917 consecutive weeks in the Billboard top 200.

Which ever band you prefer (and I think that type of exercise is just silly) that is one crazy stat. That is 18 years.

They may have started out that way, but they created some seriously great, complex, and original music.
