Welk was there to entertain, not put his personal stamp on things or convey his personal passion.

Levang and Merrill were killer guitarists.

I never thought about it like that but you are right.

You get a sense from this interview with Johnny Carson that he was very much a technician.

He also got to lead the Tonight Show Band in a tune.

There have been multiple versions of Ghost Riders in the Sky released.

Even The Doors Riders on the Storm is based on it.
