Kids finding music

I teach middle school kids, and the boys have stumbled on the Seattle Grunge Scene. It's pretty cool how a few Pearl Jam songs has them jamming out to Sound Garden and Alice in Chains.

My friend text me a playlist his 12 year old daughter made and after scrolling through a bit of kid stuff there’s nothing but bangers from the smiths, radiohead, the clash, alice in chains.

Gen Alpha loves the 90's. Like my generation coming of age in the 90's loved the 60's.
My son is 11, he and all his friends are into 90's music or music that's more modern but sounds 90's to their ears.
There's a kid in his school that has a different Nirvana shirt for every day of the week.
There's another kid who plays guitar and knows every single Green Day song ever written.

3 of my boys have been playing music from an early age. They started a band less than 2 years ago and have become pretty popular in our area. Rooted in southern rock and 70’s rock and roll

Mine likes most of what I play. The only one she didn’t like was buffalo traffic jam. She said she didn’t like his voice.

It’s always fascinating to me which bands come back in nostalgia and become popular with teens vs which ones don’t. I definitely didn’t expect Limp Bizkit, Deftones, and Korn to become as retro cool as they have.

My gf’s (no pics) daughter is 12 and she recently started singing Nirvana and Tool songs. Asked us the other day if we’d ever heard of Deftones. When she was younger she was listening to Cardi B and Lizzo. I’d say her musical taste has taken a turn for the better

My son is 16. His taste is more urban in nature. I am hoping that changes.
He briefly liked Metallica thanks to Stranger Things.

My oldest has been jamming out to AC/DC since he was about 18mths old.
Now at 6 he loves drums and guitar beats and it is cool to see.
Unfortunately his favorite song is Bad to the Bone but I guess its easy for a kid to sing.

Are yall aware that the LGBTQ kids have co-opted 90s bands as a way to signal to each other that they are of the same ilk? They wear Nirvana, No Doubt, Weezer, etc shirts. It's very weird.

Purely anecdotal, but my younger son was the same way at that age. I think it was a product of the people he hung around. He’s 27 now and really only listens to the music that I exposed him to when he was 16 (and younger).
Don’t give up hope.

My oldest grandson is a wrestling fan and he adores “Cult of Personality” because he’s a big CM Punk fan. So last weekend I decided to educate him about Living Colour because they are an incredible band. We were jamming out together to “ Open Letter to a Landlord”. I think my next step in his education is Death (the Detroit band)!

Speaking of Death…do y’all think a 13 year old is ready for this?

my daughter grew up with me listening to the Grateful Dead, Dylan, the band and little feat. Now we’ve turned her on to bluegrass and jamgrass. She went to the mountain grass unit show with us last weekend and is now spreading the word to her friends
We also saw David Byrne and she knew the songs better that I did
smart kids with taste know good music when they hear it

I'm speaking of 10-12 year olds.

So am I. Not saying that is what is going on in your situation, but it's just something I've noticed the last 5 years.

hopefully she has the same experience i did at Allman brothers shows as a teenager where old wooks couldn't wait to tell me how my parents raised me right.

That's a weird thing to simply "notice".

My kid pointed it out to me as there are cliques at school that do this.
