re: journey. Top 10 70/80s band or not

Better chance in the 1980's to be ranked higher; however, I prefer the more classic lineup with Greg Rollie. When Cain came aboard to replace Rollie, Journey went with the times and headed in a more radio friendly direction.
I agree with Ace's general comment that the musicians in the band are underrated.

They were much better in the 70s when they had Gregg Rolie and Steve Perry too. In the 80s, they became just another 80s pop band.

Ha, no.
My brother and I refer to that type of music as butt rock.
journey, styx, boston, rush, foreigner
Let's see, in your uneducated opinion that group of 5 bands easily includes....
3 of the best rock singers of all time... Steve Perry, Lou Graham and Brad Delp.
THE greatest rock drummer of all time and it's not even close (well John Bonham) is very close)
One of the most under rated guitarist in rock history in Neil Schon (was playing with Carlos Santana at the age of 16).
One of the greatest songwriters of all time in Jonathan Cain.
And between them collectively the ability to still go out and fill auditoriums 30 years after the height of their popularity.
Would love to hear what you and your brother consider to be ground breaking rock bands.......... this should be good.

Journey would struggle to make a top 20 for that period. The drummer debate is a waste of time as there are many good ones and not much separates them.

there is a thing called C.D.'s, and you can buy them and experience the deep cuts
I'd rather the deep cuts be to my wrists.

Journey was part of the soundtrack of my high school years too. But it was the pre-Steve Parry Journey.
This is the band I grew up on. LINK
ETA: This was broadcast live on KSAN, an FM station out of San Francisco. They would regularly broadcast live sessions of artists playing at the Record Plant recording studio. There are some legendary recordings of those performances out there.

Are you a drummer? The reason I ask is that anyone who is and has "tried" to learn Tom Sawyer or YYZ may feel those Rush tracks are light years harder than Open Arms or Stone in Love....... I would have to give NP the nod over Steve Smith and most certainly Ansley Dunbar. Not taking anything away from SS, that guy is a certified badass. His Weather Report tracks are very, very good.

Totally agree, but I don't think Journey is a top 10 band in their era.

Hell no. I think there's only one Journey song I ever cared for.

Rush? Damn right.

Man, the 2112/A Farewell To Kings/Hemispheres/Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures Rush blows these others away IMHO.
Yeah, Rush doesn't really fit in with the other groups but this is the Music Board, which isn't much different than the Movie Board in that regard.

Rush fans were kind of the nerds when I was in HS. You kind of had to hide your fandom because the chicks dug Styx and other pop/rock groups.
Rush was pressured to put out a top 40 friendly album and came out with 2112. I'll forever be grateful for the big middle finger they gave to the record company.

Those guys never impressed me. What someone like Charlie Watts does with a basic kit is much more impressive.

Charlie " I can't even play the 2 and 4 on my high hat" Watts?
Look, I'm really not making fun of Charlie. For the Stones, he was obviously the man, however being impressed or not, simply isn't enough to place Watts in the same sentence with Neil Peart. I honestly can't come up with an adequate analogy to convey the difference in those two drummers.
That being said, to each his own and music is great because you don't have to actually play to enjoy it.

Yes you are. How would you like to measure your ignorance? Where are they now? What have you done for me lately? It's a fricking drum, a monkey can do it.
