Of course. But they had the good fortune of being picked up by the Sopranos and college football student sections. If not for that, they'd be something of an afterthought.

70's no way. Led Zepplin was there.

80's you could make a case.

Steve Perry IS a top 10 male rock vocalist though. 80's cheese kind of made you forget how awesome he was, but he was incredible.

I've heard the same half dozen songs one too many times.
I gotcha. But there is a thing called C.D.'s, and you can buy them and experience the deep cuts.

The Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
Deep Purple
Pink Floyd
The Who
The Grateful Dead
The Eagles
Metallica
Guns n Roses
Black Sabbath

Nope, and I'd rate Van Halen higher than Journey as well.

Van Halen rates higher than Deep Purple, Grateful Dead, Metallica and Guns and Roses on that list.

That's a good case, however a case can be made that Journey in a rock sense embodied those early 80s years and were amongst the biggest concert draws. Very versatile too considering they had Neil Schon on lead guitar and Jonathan Cain composing the songs that set the template for 80s rock and they were ranked in VH1's 100 greatest artists of all-time.

Journey, along with Rush and Van Halen, were amongst the three biggest bands in the country at the time in the early Eighties. I would throw the Police and U2 in there as well to round out the top five at that time. REO Speedwagon gets an honorable mention. Can't forget AC/DC as well. I think that about does it.

If the criteria is top ten among the artist playing music in the 70s/80s, not one of those has chance outside of Rush which has a slim glimmer of hope.

If it bands that emerged in the 70s/80s, they will have a better chance, but still not good.

I absolutely agree with those 5 along with Prince and the Time for best live and studio acts. Journey was more than just a rock band they symbolized a period of time that Americans, even millenials identify with. Don't Stop Believing was actually the first catchy song that interested me in rock they are important to many people's lives beyond those who were their fans in the 80s.

You don't think Van Halen or AC/DC has a chance versus Deep Purple, Metallica or Guns and Roses? I beg to differ. The other bands I will give you. Those are legendary, all time greats. And I love all of them. But I would put Van Halen, AC/DC, U2 and the Police up there with the all time greats any day of the week.

Lol Deep Purple is better than Van Halen and AC/DC in their classic period than those groups were in their entire lives. BOOM.

Because girls liked them and their music (this happens to a handful of bands, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi are other examples) - they get dismissed, but that classic lineup? A or B (Rolie or Cain)? Forget about it. Vallory is way better than decent on the bass, and he's the weakest player in that group. Smith on the drums is one of the most underrated players on any of those 70s/80s bands - an elite talent. And Schon was invited by Carlos Effing Santana to go on the road with Santana as the second guitar player when he was 15 years old.

And we haven't even gotten to Perry - a powerful voice that deserves mention in the same league as Freddie Mercury. It was the radio friendly songs that lose them respect with music snobs. Nothing too flashy, nothing too dark, never too messagy or preachy.

(Journey is Mrs. Midnight's favorite band.)

I don't know what the hell you are talking about. The question was in regard to Journey. Van Halen, AC/DC, U2 and the Police weren't in the post.

I have seen Van Halen twice by the way, they where on the undercard for Stones concerts. I wouldn't give you a plugged nickel for them. I was honestly thinking I would pay money for them to just shut it down.

In the 70's they are not top 40. In the 80's they'd be higher because the decline in music was in full force but still no where in the vicinity of top 10.

No, pop rock.

Was a much better band when it was a three piece, instrument only band.

I would say absolutely not... on paper, they're kind of everything I hate in music...

that said, they have some cheesily catchy tunes that I kinda like... as well as some absolutely horrific ones..

Agree... but Styx and Phish are not on that level. They are one notch below.

I'd have Aerosmith and Allman Brothers on the list. Probably in place of Black Sabbath, Eagles or Metallica. Good list. In terms of quality of music and popularity there are others for consideration like Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart and Faces, Bob Seger, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Clapton...
