He is definitely mentioned a lot - not like an Eddie Van Halen, of course, but definitely revered.
Criss Oliva, for example, would be a much more underrated player to me. The guy never even got interviewed by a guitar magazine before he passed away, which is just insane.

Did Marr do anything that "difficult" with a guitar or was his sound just a product of reverb, effects, and pedals?

Not just his voice, but his depressing lyrics too...
without Marr's jangly, upbeat guitar... the Smith's would have been hard to listen to.
I also agree that he is highly rated by a lot of people, but agree that he's not a general "guitar hero" to the people that schlep around the same ol names...
