Out of all the guys who were doing jawdropping things on the electric guitar, at least in the rock/blues arena, Hendrix continues to stand out. He changed the way people thought about the instrument and what it could do.
AS I've said before, Hendrix was revolutionary, SRV was evolutionary. Jimi was out there where the busses don't run. SRV was able to stand on Jimi's shoulders.

The only 4 guys off the top of my head (and all for different reasons, of course) that were even in the same category of "revolutionary" - Robert Johnson, Les Paul, Scottie Moore and Chet Atkins, and frankly, Scottie was more influential than revolutionary. 1st guy off the bench would be Chuck Berry.
None of those 5 were as magical as Hendrix.

Good guitarist but incredibly overrated
This may be the dumbest thing I have read on TD.

Hendrix has that unmatched ability that sounds like he's playing both rhythm and lead at the same time. He's in a league by himself - the GOAT.
Check out John Butler. Different musical style, but he brings that same level of talent and accomplishes this rhythm/lead sound like Hendrix.

In terms of straight up guitar-playing ability, Hendrix is in a league by himself IMO.
You could have thrown him on stage with just about anyone and we would find a way to make it sound good.
Wasn’t necessarily the most creative, but the dude could play.

He wasn’t, but maybe he could have been. He didn’t really have the time to truly explore his creativity that Page was able to exhibit in his time with zeppelin. While he was creative with tones and techniques, his musical style was somewhat limited.
It’s not a knock on him. I think he is the best guitar player ever and don’t consider it close.

Jimmy's universe trumps Jimi's supernova.

The billy gibbons story is pretty cool. I think they played purple haze during an opening act for Jimi...sounded like Jimi was as impressed they played it at all rather than how they played it.
Gibbons is an incredible guitar player though, probably my second favorite behind Keith.
