Never have I heard people bashing Jimi's abilities. Disliking his sound, sure. Never his talent...and it only took 3 days on TD music board. Wow.

Hendrix, like a few others, changed the way that people approached & played guitar.
He did things that hadn't been seen or heard yet.
Few matched his showmanship.
The drugs probably helped make him a pretty good songwriter.
I've always thought that he was one of the greatest rhythm guitarist of all time. He had an extremely unique style that is easily recognizable. And although his voice wasn't very good, he managed to laydown those riffs while "singing".
Those things said, I don't care for his soloing. It's often sloppy(compared to so many others) and his lead/fuzz tone sounded shrill.
Since Hendrix, there have been players come along that would lay waste to him in a head cutting duel
IMO, some people name him as the greatest of all time because it's the cool thing to say.

I remember watching a doc on Jimi and they had interviews with Clapton and Lennon...this was sort of the gist...

That story reminds me of a thread a while back where someone said Stevie Ray Vaughan opened for Clapton and completely out-shined him. I think one poster said Clapton actually called SRV back out later to jam with him.

Classic rock, funk, soul, old country, 90s country, Celtic , baroque, classical, 90s rock, disco etc etc.
ETA: Hate was probably a strong word, and maybe not his style so much as just his music. Never cared that much for it. Again, I agree he was extremely talented and influential.

those players are so much more advanced than Hendrix ever was.
All of those guys could play Hendrix stuff rather easily. No chance he could have ever pulled off something like far beyond the sun, tender surrender, mr. scary, trademark, scarified, or tears of sahara.
being one of the first to do something doesn't make you the best. people will always come along that will build & improve off of groundwork that others laid. that's the case with hendrix.

He should be measured against his peers at the time. Doing what he did in the 60's was special - which is why we always put people who are ahead of their time on a pedestal...when people say he was the greatest...that's sort of the meaning...not that his guitar playing or style can never be beat.

JIMI - yes, overrated. But not in the top 10 of overrated but I would put him in the top 25 of most overrated.

i think he righfully held that place until eddie van halen exploded onto the scene. eddie, like hendrix changed the way many people approached the instrument.

OK, just for the record, I'm old. I saw Hendrix in Tulane stadium. He was really good, but I don't think he's close to being the best of all time.
