"American boys hate to lose"
That line chokes me up nearly every time I hear it.

There's a man who walks beside me he is who I used to be
And I wonder if she sees him and confuses him with me
And I wonder who she's pining for on nights I'm not around
Could it be the man who did the things I'm living down
And I wonder if she sees him and confuses him with me
And I wonder who she's pining for on nights I'm not around
Could it be the man who did the things I'm living down

My Daddy got shot right in front of his house
He had no one to fall on but me
He had no one to fall on but me

Well it's a Thursday night but there's a high school game
Sneak a bottle up the bleachers and forget my name
These 5A bastards run a shallow cross
It's a boy's last dream and a man's first loss
gives me chills typing it

Driving to a baseball game on a Friday afternoon
Hotter than hell in Atlanta, Georgia.
I guess it's been fifteen years since I came through here
Probably should have called to warn you.
But I'm stopping by. I'm stopping by, Daddy.
How did your life turn out? Do you ever think about
a teenage girl in Chattanooga?
You ever tell your folks the truth?
That might've been the last of you.
Would've been a shame. We hardly knew ya.
Now I'm stopping by. I'm stopping by, Daddy.
I think the best of me's still standing in the doorway
Counting cars and counting days and counting years
I could say you made me go through life the hard way
But it might've been worse if you were here.
Looking through a picture book. There's one I think my momma took.
You couldn't have been much over twenty.
Shirtless in your cutoff jeans, you hand a lollipop to me.
I probably asked where you got the money.
A picture on another page. I recognize my eyes have aged.
I'd been alone for quite a while then.
Trying to get a match to burn. Waiting on a latch to turn.
I still have difficulty smiling.
But I'm stopping by. I'm stopping by, Daddy.
I think the best of me's still standing in the doorway.
Whatever's left is headed south on 85.
Passing families on vacation headed your way.
They look so happy and alive, and I'm stopping by, Daddy.
_The whole damn song...and it is tragically underrated IMHO...great piece of songwriting

"You thought God was an architect, now you know, he's something like a pipe bomb ready to blow..."
And then
"You thought God was an architect, now you know, he's sitting in a black car ready to go. You'll make some new friends after the show but you'll forget their names....in 24 Frames."

Elephant is just devastating.
"I might not be a man yet,
But your father will never be,
So I load up my Weatherby.
I let out my breath
And I couple with death.
I couple with death.
Saw your father last night in the window the light made a silhouette.
Saw him hold you that way, he won't hold you that way anymore, Yvette."

I lost a good friend
Christmas time when folks go off the deep end
His woman took the kids and he took klonopin
Enough to kill a man of twice his size

Riding on my mothers hips
She was shorter than the corn
All the years I took from her
just by being born

Not for me to understand
Remember him when he was still a proud man
Vandal smile, a baseball in his right hand
Nothing but blue skies in his eyes

So, say your last goodbye
Make it short and sweet
There ain't no way for you to fly
With her hanging on your feet
Days when we raged, we flew off the page
Such damage was done
But I made it through, cause somebody knew
I was meant for someone
I grew up two hours north of Birmingham
Me and my daddy used to fish next to Wilson Dam
He told some stories of Camaros and J.W Dant
When I got a little older I wouldn't and now Daddy can't.

Doctor said daddy wouldn't make it a year, but the holidays are over and he's still here.
Also,
You and I were almost nothing, pray to God that God was bluffing , seventeen ain't old enough to reason with the pain. ??

"A man is a product of all the people that he ever loved, and it don't make a difference how it ended up" -If It Takes a Lifetime
"And the couple in the corner by the bar,
Have traveled light and clearly traveled far,
He's got nothing left to learn about his heart,
And they're sitting there a thousand miles apart,
Baby lets not ever get that way,
I'll say whatever words I need to say,
I'll throw rocks at your window from the street, we'll call ourselves the flagship of the fleet"
-Flagship
"Watch that lucky man walk to work again
He may not have a friend left in the world
See him walking home again to sleep alone
Or step into a shop to buy a postcard for a girl"-Relatively Easy
