I listen to Pineapple Thief a good bit. While I do enjoy their work, I don't think they are using Gavin as well as they could. At least not to the level of Porcupine Tree.

Jazz drummers were mentioned. Do not disagree. I think you could put Carey in behind a jazz kit and he’d be fine. He’s like those people on YouTube who can play anything on a guitar. Classical or steel string. He has mastered the drums. You could task him with anything to play and any style. Give him a bit of time to rehearse it and he’d nail it.
Danny is trained in Jazz. The only other drummer, to me, that is in his league with polyrhythms and odd time signatures is Tomas Haake of Meshugga. Meshugga doesn’t swap time signatures 7 to 10 times in a song, like Tool.

Though I don't think anyone quite manages to feature the drums like Danny does. He is amazing. That Pneuma video is a treasure.

Whoever the drummer is in Willie Nelson’s band. If you’ve ever seen Willie live, he plays his music at whatever tempo and time signature the spirit moves him to. Speed up, slow down, add extra beats, cut short chorus, and his drummer never once missed a beat or even looked rattled.
