The lack of a 15k-20k seat amphitheater makes the New Orleans area lose out on a ton of business from the spring until the end of summer as so many bands specifically play that circuit during the warmer months.
Is that really the reason. I HATE those cookie cutter amphitheater venues around the country - mostly because it's pretty much the only format where there are seats really far from the stage.

Houston gets big pop and rap acts but struggles for your goose level bands
White oak has helped a bit

Are you not considering The Woodlands to be part of Houston? I hate going to shows there, but there is no amphitheater like that in Nola.
Not to mention mid-sized venues like HOB, 713, Bayou Music, Smart Financial, Warehouse, and WOMH like you just mentioned.

There is only so many Dave Mathews or pop country acts I can stand

Woodlands blows. Security there is so damn tight arse. I’ve been kicked out of a show for “sitting at the wrong seat” cause I lost my ticket. They check my ticket during the encore. They made my pregnant wife toss her clear bag because it was an inch too big.

Houston may get bigger acts but gets weekday or skipped by a lot of acts that do New Orleans then Austin.

Like 30 years ago? Maybe it was different but the old fricks that have been working there for the last 20 years suck

It’s a nice venue otherwise. I’ll grant you New Orleans doesn’t have anything like that

That said, Houston sucks for live music for its size

Yes. The big tours from spring to mid fall are almost all outdoors now. Bands are playing less and less arena shows for whatever reason.

Every punk and metal band I want to see has a date in Houston. Who do you want to see that’s not coming there?

Punk and metal scene isn’t bad. Mexicans love metal

More talking jambands and festival act which New Orleans and Austin are infinitely better

I am not the only one that complains but this it’s pretty well noted

it does blow. Beautiful venue but easily the most unpleasant concert experience I’ve ever had.

still…I wish we had something like it here. And BTW, the weather in Houston is the same as here so it being hot in summer is not an excuse

it goes well beyond that. We rarely get weekend shows. lot of midweek stuff. No music festival has survived.

it i am not just complaining that Phish never comes here.

quote:

Austin is a city of nearly 1 million people. But its big, beating heart — at least for entertainment — is the University of Texas, with its 40,000-plus undergrads. The city remains a very desirable place for a touring act to drop anchor on a Friday or Saturday night. Once a band is in Austin, Dallas is just three hours away, then another six or seven to Memphis, an esteemed music town. Those who book tours can use Dallas as a path toward other desirable cities.

By contrast, Houston has a reputation among booking agents as a walk-up town, where fans make the decision to attend the day of the show. People in the concert booking business like assurance. There’s little reassurance in a concert that sold well below capacity hours before doors open. New Orleans isn’t too far to the east, but it has a reputation as a better city for established musicians to play.

i'd gladly trade New Orleans music scene for Houston's any day

Memphis is also horrible, especially given it's music reputation.

And you might think Baton Rouge would get good shows, with LSU and 30,000 college students right there but they do not.

Shreveport gets better live music than Baton Rouge does.

that is part of the problem with Houston. UH is a commuter school rep and rice is tiny

Also a pretty early working town with the port and oil field service work.

I think it’s probably a good thing

Once bands get “big” too many people like them and they start to suck

See turnpike, they were better at the varsity than the river center

So on the Music Board, is el Gaucho a real person and not really el Gaucho?

Your persona doesn't carry over here?

I’m not trolling

I’m saying that bands are better before they get big, I think that’s a fact that everyone agrees with

I know you aren't. That's what prompted by comment. I've never seen serious el Gaucho.
