You can buy a PRS Silver Sky for $2800 it is basically a copy of John Mayers strat. Has vintage fretboard radius and pickups designed to mimic vintage 62 pickups. You can step up to a Suhr Classic S for about $3500. Both are cheaper than Fender Custom Shop and the QC is much better. At the lower end the PRS SE Silver Sky is light years better than Fenders non USA guitars and one could argue that the QC on the SE is as good as lower end USA made Strats.

Meh. Every single guitar maker has a model (or 2) at every price point. I'm not saying that's a perfect strategy, but they're all doing it for a reason.
And Fender has never really been a big player in acoustics, so the solid body electrics (overwhelmingly Strats and Teles) is their hill upon which to die, I suppose.
I mean, Gibson started the headstock war 50 years ago (and Fender ultimately joined them). At a certain point they should have charged a nominal fee to the copiers and required them to use "Fender Strat-style" or "Fender Tele-style" in their marketing and descriptions. That would have been a form of free (or even paid back) advertising.
