I'm on a classic metal kick and want to get a best of album or two to get familiar with Maiden. Preferably available on iTunes. Any suggestions? I just want a sampling of their best stuff before I start buying while albums. TIA

Correct.

I have entire IM set, and this is my favorite album by them. Every song is solid. In fact, I will listen to it today on my hour-long run.

Also, "The Essential Iron Maiden" is a good collection. Some live tracks mixed in if I remember correctly.

While I will never advocate singles or individual songs over full-length albums, here is a list of some of their universally-loved work:

-"Number of the Beast"
-"Run to the Hills"
-"Aces High"
-"2 Minutes to Midnight"
-"Rime of the Ancient Mariner"
-"Powerslave"
-"Prowler"
-"Phantom of the Opera"
-"Killers"
-"Seventh Son of a Seventh Son"
-"Somewhere in Time"
-"Hallowed be thy Name"
-"Fear of the Dark"

They have multiple greatest hits albums, both live and studio.

However, I would start with Number of the Beast and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. After you become addicted to those, you will want to buy them all.

I envy you not knowing this stuff. For me, these dozens of songs are like old friends, but I'd love to be able to go back and hear them for the 1st time again.

Maiden came out with a new album in 2015 that was very good and took a few risks.

Revelations live is my alltime favorite live performance.

I can't even listen to the studio version now. the live after death version ruined it for me. it was great until I heard it live. the tempo just drags on piece of mind.

That's true, although I do like to listen for that big intake of breath that Bruce does: "so I watched UHHHHHHHH and I waited".

Are you the real Geert? If so, tell Rich Krajewski I said hello.

It's close. I'd put their Dance of Death up there as well.

Also, hard to top Hallowed Be Thy Name

Revelations is an under appreciated song.

Wow, that's an obscure pull, although I do love that album as well. Isn't that the same one that has Paschendale live? If so, Paschendale is better.

When I actually see them live, this is my favorite part. It's usually the final song. The last 60 seconds draws tears every time.

I got this when it came out in the early 2000's, although I didn't lay out $200 clams for it. It's amazing. There's over 30 b-sides, almost all I'd never heard before.

Number of the Beast and Powerslave are where to start.

Then probably Piece of Mind, Seventh Son, and Killers for some pre-Bruce stuff (different, more punky, but still awesome).

Number of the Beast and Seventh Son are two of my favorite albums of all time.
