Long before BR concerts were hosted at the LSU Assembly Center (PMAC) and the Riverside Centroplex (River Center), there was a small unique building located behind the State Capitol on the shores of Capitol Lake. Many legendary performers played there. The Hall also hosted "Dixie Wrestling", a very popular league of local wrestlers long before the days of WWE or WWF. I have attached some links to dive into for reference.

Man I never saw a show there. I had heard about it by early high school but the last show I remember hearing about at the time was Krokus and sure enough, it’s the last one listed on the setlist link. I wonder if it was truly the last show there. I know I also heard about a Bad Company show there, I think a little before the Krokus show, but it’s not listed at all.

You picked the perfect one for your image. Black Sabbath at Independence Hall would be a time machine show for me for sure. I also knew Hendrix had played there but was not aware of Lynyrd Skynyrd in ‘74. I bet that show was epic.

I was at that show, I think Uriah Heep was with them. As far as I know, it was the last show in that building. The name had changed to the Royal Casino - Royal Rouge Hotel at that point.

I'm as big a wrestling fan as you'll find and grew-up in South Louisiana. This "Dixie Wrestling" is something I'm not familiar with. I've only heard it mentioned once before by an old-timer who was also raised here. Was it a precursor to the better known Mid-South Wrestling? Was there a television show?

Sweet. Saw them open for Def Leppard the next year and thought they were great. I bet they were really good headlining Independence Hall. I prefer the smaller venue shows too.

Dixie Wrestling: I think was the BR version of Mid-South. It aired on Sunday mornings, right after TV Church

Cowboy Bill Watts, Grizzly Smith, Dr. X, Ivan Putski……….this would have been in the 70's.

More energy than any group I've ever seen. AND, the bass wasn't cut
out of the mix as it was in their recordings. They tore down the house
and came back two weeks later on their southern tour. Went back and
was equally impressed.

I am old, not quite that old

I started going to concerts in 1975 when I was 15.

Didn't some good shows happen at LSU early on, like at the Union or some place like that?

Thanks for shedding some light on that, TreeDawg. It's fun to know "Dixie Wrestling" was a real thing at that the folks who've mentioned it to me aren't crazy.

Before my time. All I know about is Hendrix's show and The Speakeasy

Did you see The Sex Pistols at The Kingfish (present-day Southdowns Gym)? You would have been around 17-8?

More pics and articles about the Sex Pistols show in BR (Jan 9, 1978)

I saw many shows at the Kingfish, but I was so damned anti-punk and a hardcore rocker, I had zero interest in that show. I was well aware of it. Looking back, obviously I made the wrong decision.

I can remember seeing Eddie Money, Starcastle, Edgar Winter Group, Head East.........and some others. It was a cool venue, 99 cent shows, Uncle Earls was next door and Southdowns Bar was across the parking lot. It was a very busy congregation of bars and partiers!!

I remember Dire Straits playing at The Union for $5 (I think) in support of their first rekkid which had a song on it that was just starting to get airplay...Sultans Of Swing.

I loitered in front of The Speakeasy for a lot of shows. Just too damn young to get in.

Was there. Best $3.50 I ever spent. My ears still ring to this day.

I found a pic of Independence Hall. It was a uniquely constructed building with great acoustics, loud as hell, small venue with a tunnel that connected the adjacent Hotel.
