Please help me understand. I tried listening to them for the first time today. Sounds like hippy Grateful Dead reincarnate or something and I really don't like GD. Just don't get it, but hey I gave it a shot.

They are one of the most popular jam bands... If you don't like jam bands then you probably won't like Phish.
If you're trying to get into jam bands, listen to '93 Phish or try a different jam band. Heady will be along in the morning to lay out some must hear jams that may tilt the scale.
ETA Some of my favorites so far
Wolfman's Brother
Birds of a Feather
Ocelote
Character Zero
Down with Disease
Julius
Weekapaug Groove
Song the Ocean Sings
And more I can't remember at the moment

Before this turns into 5-10 pages of bullshite, let it be known the MB regulars did not start this thread about Phish. Just everyone take note of that.

Yeah, I mean its hard to compete with all the well thought out and brilliant threads that come along but I try. The point of this thread was to possibly get input as to what songs were peoples favorites to give them a fair chance. If I like them great, if not, I have nothing lost.

That is a terrible suggestion to get people into Phish
They need to start off with Vegas 96 or A Live One to just get the basic idea down.

Yeah, because the ALO Tweezer is so noob-friendly...
It is hard to suggest something without knowing the person's tastes. I always suggest 12.31.95 because that is what got me into it. Even then there is some pretty deep stuff that could be intimidating on there, especially in Set II with Drowned, Runaway Jim, and Mike's all taking extended journeys.
