I prefer APC's sound over Tool but I can't say that one band is better than the other.

All you millennials who just recently discovered Tool are ridiculous. In no way, shape, or form is Fear Inoculum better than any previous Tool album. In fact, it's their worst effort.
While I agree with you, millennials didn’t just discover Tool.

I'll admit I was sort of late to the Tool party, around 2003, but this is a terrible take.
I was slow to warm up to 10,000 Days and maybe that's what is going on with you, but I strongly urge you to reconsider. Invincible is my favorite Tool song not named "Lateralus".

13 minute songs do not equal greatness.
And, while us Tool fans are still talking here, relatively politely, this is kind of a weird melt.
Yeah the songs have tended to get longer over the years - no question. Opiate didn't average 4 minutes per track if you considered Opiate and TGLE separate songs. Undertow was an average of about 6 minutes (minus the crickets and silence at the end). Eulogy is one of my favorites by them and it was 8 1/2 minutes. Lateralus is 9 1/2 minutes. Rosetta Stoned is over 11 minutes. The length of songs don't hurt any of the strong tracks on FI, IMHO.
You mad, bro?

It’s better than 10000 days but not better than previous efforts

Also I just want to point out that my favorite song on their debut LP, Flood, is 7:50 long, their first album

If you like more polished, mainstream, and refined music, than liking APC more than Tool isn’t some crazy idea. Bands like Tool take a lot of effort to appreciate because of how unique and different they are. I’ve tried multiple times to get into Tool and just can’t.
For that very reason, Eat the Elephant is my favorite album from either band. It’s more modern, in how it feels closer to all the other music that I listen to and in how relatable the lyrics are to the present day. Songs like “Disillusioned” conquer topics that likely a lot of people on this board have dealt with in their every day life. “So Long And Thanks for All the Fish” is both nostalgic and modern.
I can see why Tool fans bristle at this OP for the same reason I like APC more though. Tool is unique. Different. A genre on its own. APC sounds more like everyone else. And not everyone is so heavy into this topic that they are capable of appreciating Tool on the level that so many of their fans do.
ETA: I’d bet OP used “like” instead of “better” for a reason, except he didn’t explain it.

How so?
The only breathing room I'll give you is verses Opiate, and that is debatable.
Aenima is their best imo.
Lateralus comes 2nd.
Undertow is 3
10,000 days is 4.
Argue over 5-6 if you want. I might give the edge to FI over Opiate.

Ok, so your 1st listen to Tool was from the album lateralus. Gotcha.
Makes sense.

0 melt from me. I just feel bad for the new listeners, who missed their great music while in their prime.

I have no problem with Tool's long songs. They in a sense were pioneers at the art.
To wait 13 years for Fear Inoculum, and to have only 3 really great tracks, was a disappointment.
Were Pnuema, invincible, FI, and 7empest good tracks? Sure.
In comparison to their leading tracks on any other Tool album not named opiate?

Not at all. In fact I'm glad to see a thread on Tool. It shows there are still fans of real music out there.

I must be the only Tool fan that ranks both 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum ahead of Undertow.

I could find a way to agree with you on 10,000 days.
Vicarious, The pot, and Right in two were timeless tracks. Some could throw Jambi in there (Not me)
But of those 3, what 3 from FI are even close to as good as these?
Pneuma? Invincible?
Great tracks I suppose, but in comparison to the 3 from 10,000 Days? Nah too much filler on FI's other songs minus Pnuema and the title track.
7empest in parts is great, but has roughly 5 minutes of what sounds like a chalkboard in a blender from around 5:00-10:00. They clearly went for quantity >> quality.
Again, the brilliance of tool was that they could make a 10 minute song, and it not seem that long because it was great from start to finish. (Hence, I wouldn't need to fast fricking forward the tracks) that's kinda what I mean when I say 13 minute songs alone don't make that album great.

I've seen Tool a half dozen times, APC twice and Puscifer once. Only one had a Lucha libre style wrestling match as the opening act.

What Undertow has going for it is that it is tight, efficient and has no real weak spot. It doesn't quite have the highs of subsequent albums, but not much filler either.
Certainly the high points of FI and even 10k Days seems to surpass the elite tracks of Undertow (mainly Sober and Prison Sex), but 10k Days (which I admit I was slow to warm up to and continue to like it better over the years) has a much bumpier road the rest of the way, relatively speaking.
I do like FI better than Undertow now, after a year. I have it roughly on par with Aenima, but unlikely to catch Lateralus - which remains the best heavy record of the 21st Century, IMHO, with FI its only real competition.

Plus the title track and you're probably there. Descending and 7empest are right there, too, though.
Invincible is already my second favorite Tool song and Pneuma could ultimately crack my Top 5. I get that this is all subjective, but I'm definitely not alone on this one.

I'm going to agree with you there. While most Tool songs this long are cohesive and are well put together, I can't finish this song. It's unnecessarily long to the point it's like they're being self indulgent.

To be honest, Fear Inoculum is my least favorite as well. Maybe I'm just getting old or my tastes have changed, but it just doesn't do it for me. My least favorite today is 10K days but I still listened to that nonstop for about a year. With Fear, it kept my attention for maybe a month. It just isn't interesting to me.

4 degrees is my favorite by Tool.

The 1st 5 minutes of so of 7empest is the best part of the new album imho. The rest are good, but not great. As for APC, they are great. I still prefer Tool though.
