In order of raw talent
John Mayer, John Frusciante, Derek Trucks.

Frusciante
Trucks
Mayer
Frusciante is just extremely creative in his phrasing and he thinks outside of the box rhythmically. He can solo pretty well, but his phrasing and tone are what really stand out.
As far as this list, popularity is clearly a huge component, because there are far more technically proficient guitarists out there. It just depends on what you like. I personally could live without ever hearing another Eddie Van Halen wankathon.

if you are going with raw talent, I don't see how it can't be Trucks. have you seen the video of him performing Layla on stage at 11 years old?

I honestly think they are all so damn even.
They also play different styles, so that is fun.
Trucks
Frusciante
Mayer
Trucks is the only one I've seen live, around 8 times probably.

Trucks
Mayer
Frusciante
Trucks is the best guitarist
Mayer is the best total package though (songwriting/singing to go along with his playing)
Frusciante is outstanding as well though.

Same here. He's an incredible guitarist with great tone and phrasing, too. I really hope he breaks out his bluesy stuff on Friday and avoids the newer stuff a little

There's no way you're competent on a musical instrument.

The stuff that trucks does with a slide is very impressive

When you grow up with the Allman Bros you tend to get pretty good at music....
