For the film, the "band" members played their own instruments and sang their own vocals - which is a lot more than many actual, legitimate "bands" and "recording artists" do today.

Spinal Tap actually has toured a few times. They would open the shows as The Folksmen and would get booed by the crowd who did not get the joke early on.

You can get the soundtrack with the full songs. It is fun to listen to. There is humor in the music as well as the lyrics. As noted earlier, the actors played all the music and all the songs were written by the actors and Rob Reiner.
