No Depeche Mode?

Hell no. They had no cred whatsoever. They were a less popular Duran Duran. And the Dead Milkmen made fun of them on You'll Dance to Anything.

Funny haircut rock was not "hipster" music. College radio wasn't playing Kajagoogoo.

1) Do The Pixies fall under the umbrella of the just-coined genre of "Hipster Classic Rock"?
There is no such genre.

2) If not, who does? Who are the original hipster bands?

See answer to #1.

I can't think of The Cure without thining about Depeche Mode. I have a cousin who is about six years older than me and when I was a little fella he was, as best i could tell, the coolest individual on the planet. Hanging in his room were posters of The Cure and Depeche Mode.

I probably haven't even heard three Depeche Mode songs, and I'm likely single digits with The Cure. I had no idea my post was inane. Now I know.

So thank you Baloo.

yeah. What's hipster? I didn't see that term until about 7 years ago so I can't imagine any music from the 80's being labeled hipster.

Someone who does not dress, behave/act, or carry themselves in the manner that I think they should or would expect them to.

It's a derisive term for indie rock.

Indie rock grew out of "alternative" which grew out of "college rock" which grew out of punk. It is all, essentially, the same genre. It is rock not necessarily going for popularity first, though it can be popular and the bands tend to aim for popularity among a certain type of person (disaffected, yet hyper-literate)

"A hipster is someone who is smart enough to talk about philosophy, music, politics, art, etc. with you all day long, but not smart enough to see how big of a tool s/he is. The only sure fire way to tell if someone you're talking to is, in fact, a hipster is to ask them "are you a hipster?". If they respond no, and turn their casette player back on, you can be sure you're dealing with a hipster."

You're welcome. I didn't say your question was inane. Depeche Mode has had a revival in popularity, but they were not adored, usually, but the same people who listened to the Pixies. They were out and out despised by punk rock types.

The Cure and the Smiths fit in an odd place. Look, no one liked the goths in your high school, but those bands were good enough that they were acceptable for the proto-hipsters kids and the punkers to listen to. I mean, they were good enough to break out of the goth ghetto. But lots of kids wearing tons of black were listening to lots of Cure records.

The Cure has some great stuff. While they have some more pop-py stuff start with these albums: Pornography, Disentegration and Bloodflowers. These 3 are terrific works.

I'm pretty sure you're cooler than me. I'm not going to publicly acknowledge the number of those bands that I've even heard of, much less actually listened to, but it is not a large number.
