The best way to distinguish rock n roll from metal, in my opinion, is the amount of blues and general African American influences in the music. The more the music is rooted in European classical music, the more likely it is to be considered “metal”. The more it’s rooted in delta blues, the more likely it will be considered “rock n roll” (the big exception being “stoner metal”).

The irony here is that the earlier bands considered heavy metal, Deep Purple comes to mind, were heavily influenced by the blues. Now I guess they would be simply considered Hard Rock?

Heavy Metal should have no other instruments than drums, bass guitar and electric lead. Hard Rock can include these things.
Heavy Metal -lyrics are not thought provoking and only support the main riff from the musicians.
Heavy Metal- can't dance to it, just move to it.
Heavy Metal is a monster truck, Hard rock is a race car.

Except there are several symphonic metal bands with keys and strings that are heavier and more bombastic than some "traditional" metal bands.

That's what make it so difficult - too many exceptions.

Yea, I don't even consider that song to be Heavy Metal.

Also, what is a "Hair Band"

I was listening to a supposed "Hair Band" channel and there was Van Halen, Aerosmith, Journey, Guns N Roses: I don't consider any of them to be Hair Bands.

I consider that to be more of Poison, Ratt, Dokken, Warrant, etc.

I think the same when I hear Led Zeppelin called metal. Led Zeppelin, a band that played half their songs with an acoustic lead guitar. Ido understand and agree that one could call either group a predecessor, or forefather of metal though. I just don’t see that as being the same as being metal.

Also, their entire first album was covers of old blues songs. Zeppelin was not a metal band, they were a blues/rock band who found a way to make those songs just blisteringly heavy whether acoustic or electric.

Nickelback has heavier riffs than Creed and Tool.

It's why Diamond/Dimestore/Douchebag Darrell liked them.

I don’t either. I think “hard rock” from the ‘70’s morphed into heavy metal in the ‘80’s.

Just a totally ignorant take on metal lyrics. So much of metal has deep and powerful lyrical content.

If I hear excessive double bass

As much as bob hates gated reverb drums, I hate double bass drums with double pedals on them. Most annoying sound in the world outside of that asthmatic singer from the Cranberries.

There is no line, its a spectrum, and time has alot to do with it.

As others have said Led Zeppelin was considered hard rock back in the day, but most now would consider it tame. They are deeply rooted in blues and even have bluegrass/country hints.

"Metal" really progressed in the 80's but again most today would consider that tame.

I don't think Blues and other styles have much to do with it. The vast majority of western music is rooted in Blues, and yes most metal is as well. Black Sabbath, who many believe are one of the pioneers of metal are heavily Blues.

I consider it more about "heaviness", which is kind of subjective but I don't think you can define it with specific scales, lyrics, or beats.

Don Felder’s Heavy Metal (Takin A Ride) is even less metal. But, it’s a great song.
