Has the Guitar Solo Died?

I listen to a pretty good amount of new music. Lot of Alt Nation stuff and just other general rock music.
I don't hear guitar solos often. Almost never, what happened to them?
I know there are jam bands that put out songs still with guitar solos but I'm talking more about main stream music not having solos. It is depressing to me.
Am I missing them? Please show me the way

Check out Davy Knowles' stuff. Dude is a 25-year-old blues rock British phenom. Peter Frampton's protege.

I beg to differ. I think it is making a comeback. New Van Halen, Slash, and etc. all has solos.

Most new rock bands seem to not do a solo. The old school bands still shred.

way to showcase that solos havent died by picking musicians whose peak was 15-20 years ago.
for the most part, radio music has been diluted to least common denominator, so its rap, country, girl pop, and whatever pseudo hard rock 92.3 plays. these have definitely decreased in solos, and hipster music has had zero solos, but i dont know anyone whose favorite bands have songs on the radio. everyone listens to pandora, xm, and ipods. the guitar playing and solos have increased in technicality and musicianship WAY past the 90's. if anything its on a massive up swell.
protest the hero, animals as leaders, periphery, born of osiris, are all young bands who are at the front of extrememly technical guitar playing. i have no idea what to call that new style of playing. djent? that maybe the closest?
its this type of stuff. abolish the echelon

Short, tasty, well phrased solos can be absolutely magical. On the other hand, long, self-indulgent, masturbatory guitar solos make me want to slit my wrists just to get it over with.
Of course, I'm one of those people who believe that great musicians know what notes/licks not to play every bit as much as what to play.
Just like playing drums. Always play just ever so slightly behind the beat and reduce the "fills" to just above zero.
ETA: That's why, imo, bands like Rush are completely absurd, regardless of technical skill.

No doubt, J Mascis was one of the first people to bring back the guitar solo to punk/post-punk/indie music... There are some that still do it...

Agreed for the most part. Any drummers you think do a particularly good job of this?
I think of The Pixies right away. Maybe Third Eye Blind.

Buckethead - Soothsayer
Black Veil Brides - Love Isn't Always Fair
These are just a few to throw out there. Another good band for solo's is Avenged Sevenfold.
