quote:
"You took the musics of immigrant America, the ballads, the blues, the rambles of Woody Guthrie and The Clancy Brothers and Dominic Behan, the cadences of gospel, the imagery of William Blake and Bessie Smith, the amphetamine-fuelled poetry of bebop Greenwich Village and the windblown mournfulness of the lonesome prairie, and fired them in the kiln of the most extraordinary single imagination ever to work in popular music,"

I've been struggling recently with an issue that's come up re Bob Dylan. I've always secretly regarded him as a melodic genius, despite the fact that he is usually lauded for his lyrics. My all-time favorite is Don't Think Twice It's Alright. I can never get it out of my head. (I really love the Waylon version too).
Anyway, the melody from that song is taken from an old folk song called Who's Gonna Buy Your Chickens When I'm Gone?
In fact, here's a List of Dylan songs based on earlier tunes.
My question is: when the liner notes say "Words and Music by Bob Dylan", what the heck does that even mean in reality? The hard part of writing Blowin' in the Wind is creating the melody. Yet, that melody was over 100 years old when the Dylan song was released (it was a slave spiritual.)
I think it's a bit fraudulent to claim to be writing the "music" when you are simply repeating an extant melody.

He's #2 all time, behind The Beatles imo. He repeatedly changed his style through the years and always delivered.

Probably the greatest songwriter in history along with Pete Townshend. Impeccable melodies, articulate lyrics, innovative instrumentation by which to convey. Doesn't get much better.

You could argue your point for nearly every songwriter out there. It's all been done before. Dylan does take a lot of liberties, though, but plays it off like "If it wasn't for me, no one would know who so and so was". Happy birthday Bob.

Really? I mean, I know everything is out in the ether. But that's different than literally just taking existing melodies. Rappers have been crucified over the years for "sampling". Dylan? Sainted.

Best songwriter of all time.

Dylan is, for me, simultaneously the most influential single artist in American popular history, and wildly overrated.
Yeah, that doesn't make any sense, but I bet some of you are nodding your heads in agreement
Anyway, Happy 75th Birthday Mr. Zimmerman. And if this was the only song of yours I ever heard, I'd still think you were brilliant.

That Line" By the way that's a cute hat,and your smile is so hard to resist" about the best of all time.
or maybe "steal a little and they throw you in jail, steal a lot and they'll make you a king" that song is full of them.
That whole album was just great.

I've always felt like Dylan is the final product that Woody Guthrie started. Both took many popular folk melodies and changed the lyrics or slightly changed the tune to make them their own. Dylan just did it with an endless imagination whereas Guthrie based most things on his own personal experience. I believe that both are essential to the preservation of folk and americana, but Dylan just has that aura about him thats hard to explain. He definitely changed the world for the better, thats why I named my son after him

Let's give Dylan all of the credit he deserves.
He is also the first rapper.

One of the most important rock albums in history and a brilliant album by Bob and Co.
