Got favorite acoustic strings down.

Totally lost with electric.

Guitar: Agile Les Paul style.

Goals: To become Eric Clapton. Minus heroin and cocaine and stealing my friends wife. If I feel I am getting close to Clapton I will buy a Strat and properly mimick Clapton.

Not looking to save money on strings. I am very easy on them and play lightly. So they will last quite a while. Hence I would dorm over 30 bucks on a set of strings if one were really worth it.

I have a set of Optima gold strings (10s). They are 24 carat gold plated and last forever.

I've had this same set on since I built my guitar in 2004 and they are just now getting the gold worn off from my fingers. I practice 30-90 minutes a night and the strings still squeak when I do slides after nearly 14 years.

Easily worth the $25 for them.

Are there any fairly well known garbage strings? You NEVER read a bad review on anything online except food on Yelp.

I am thinking the Optima look good and I had luck with elixirs on my acoustic. So I may try them or the GHS mentioned.

I like uncoated, inexpensive strings, so D'Addario EXLs for electric and Martin phosphor bronze for acoustic.

you probably won't be able to tell the difference in tone between different brands of strings, and at your experience level, i wouldn't even concern myself with that. for now, just focus on what size strings feel good to you. i personally hate 9's and much prefer 10's (.10 - .46). i'd get a set of each and try them both out because chances are good you won't feel comfortable with 11's at this stage.

i wouldn't go with "garbage" strings, but there's no need to get high end ones either. the GHS ones mentioned are popular and inexpensive. d'addario is also popular.

Sorry. I meant "garbage" as in strings to avoid. Not strings to throw on there because I suck anyway

I think everybody makes pretty good strings these days. I use a lot of GHS and think they're pretty decent. But I don't think I've ever strung up a set of strings that made me regret putting them on.

D'Addario EXLs .10 - .46

You can get them for $3.50 on Amazon. Great string and have very good tone.

I used Elixirs a few times but the coating seems to dampen the strings a little. Not much but it was noticeable to me.

They did last a long time but the coating starts to fray and it looks like shite after awhile

Any of the big brands will do fine. D'Addario, GHS, Ernie Ball, etc. Steer clear of cheap brands like First Act. I put a set of these on for a friend and they felt and sounded like garbage.

Personally I like 10s over 9s because thinner strings sound weaker.

Eta: The Optimas have all the advantage of Elixirs (won't corrode or rust) but better tone since gold is much harder and more durable than the plastic coating. It makes better contact with the fret. And the coating doesn't fray. It wears off on the bottom of the string where it touches the fret but your fingers never feel this. It takes years for your fingers to wear the gold off from the top of the strings.

No need to reinvent the wheel here, man.

Please don't spend $35 in a set of strings.

As I said above I have a set of Optimas that are the only set I've ever had on this guitar and I spent either $25 or 30 on them 14 years ago.

I play all the time too. If I bought a "cheaper" set for $10 or 15 I'd probably have to replace them every year.

That's $140-210 in the same time span. I probably bought them to have all gold everything and didn't get my hopes up on the tone or longevity but I was surprised.

Which ones, though? That's a whole family of different strings.

My son would shite his 6 year old self with gold strings. His only guitar requirement was gold. Red was a DISTANT plan B.
