Guitar selection for WAY down the road?

Fender Telecaster or Gibson Les Paul???
Just new. Or second hand but not looking at classic, for example a "1970" whatever Les Paul model same as Jimmy Page played etc etc., just a recent year model of each guitar respectively.
What can a second hand Telecaster be had for?

Depends what style of music you prefer. Fenders have that bell tone that I love. I have two strats and really enjoy them. I'm looking into getting a Gibson 335 soon for that warmer tone.

I have noticed more country guys using the Telecaster. Les Pauls seem rock exclusively. I wonder what you guys think about the versatility of either guitar?

If you want versatility I would suggest a Stratocaster.

i have never thought of a 335 as having a warm tone. it always seems a little on the flat side, with much less treble. they sound good, but the gretsch and a few other slims or arches really sound warmer than the 335. just my 0.02

In regards to what I normally play I'd say it is. I may have used the wrong term, but love the sound on a 335. Instead of that ring from the fender, always looking to add to the arsenal. I have an Ibanez Artcore, which is pretty much their attempt at one. Not bad for the price either.

If I got a Gibson Les Paul, it would be a a very old one (pre 70s).
I wouldn't get a Fender is I was loaded. I would get this instead (G&L improved strat clone):

I personally love the sound and feel of a telecaster but you can't say one is "better" than the other its all about taste.

This is a "what if" guitar thread. This is a "if I someday have more money than common sense (not for lack of common sense" decision. The G&L is much more reasonable. They run just north of a grand.

Just get one or two of everything then you'll have all the bases covered.
BTW, been playing a LP the last several years in my rock/pop/country gig but run to the tele when I break a string. I keep a strat and another LP up there just in case the tele blows up, too.

I got a Joe Bonamassa Les Paul in just yesterday. It freaking weighs 10 pounds. I'm sending it back. It's too heavy. (the burstbucker pups are too warm but that's a different story :))
Teles and LPs are kinda' on opposite ends of the spectrum. G & L makes a tele w/ P90s (asat special). Look at those or LP Jrs.

Get a used tele and throw a nice pickup in the bridge. It'll be cheaper and you'll get more variety, as les pauls have one sound.

I prefer the Les Paul. It has a deeper tone, which i love. Fenders tend to have a higher pitched kind of tone. Go watch videos of people playing both and go to guitar center and play both. You'll see. Of course pick ups and amps and peddles make a huge difference too. I have a Les Paul. Its not chambered, its one solid piece of mahogany. I love it.

My next guitar is going to be a Gibson SG. There is one at GC right now with pretty much that exact finish. I cant afford to drop the money on it though.
