Do you use any strings that make you think “what the hell am I doing?”

I have a set of Thoastik Infeld on y best acoustic. It’s my second set. The first I broke the frikkin B-String restringing it. lol. Rookie move. They sounded great with a mismatch b-string. Now second set is on and breaking in strum and finger picking are both awesome. The price is really only 10-12 bucks more than good sets of elixirs.

I have tried 2 sets of gold pyramid strings. Did not like them enough for 25 bucks. I’ll just keep buying these.

What strings have you thought “that’s ridiculous” but tried them anyway?

I always stick with the same strings. I like things to be consistent.

Not a guilty pleasure, but I tried .08s on my Strat once. It was fun, for about a minute.

Not really guilty pleasure, just expensive but the daddario coated strings are awesome. I think I’ve had a set on my guitar for like three years and play it hours a day with an aggressive attack, never in its case. At this point I have to let it ride until they fall off.

The cost 2-3x as regular strings but they last 10x as long. They don’t grime up as bad, which usually gets to my guitars pretty quick.

"Best strings" are one of the most subjective things guitarists could ever discuss or debate. In that there is no right or wrong answers when you consider the scope of player metabolisms, instrument environment(s), instrument usage or lack of, and personal preferences as they pertain to what is ideal tone, feel and playability.

What one pays has absolutely zero bearing on what is the best string for anyone's needs and tastes. Especially when you consider there is so much ghost building in the world of guitar strings, the manufacturer of one's favorite string and one's least favorite string may actually be the same plant and/or the same machinery and/or the same raw wire and alloy sources.

That being said, considering the major influencing factors in which one can make general assessments of strings by brand and price; and the consensus needs and tastes of fretted instrumentalists in general based on the attributes above plus pricing and availability ...

Pick your preferred gauge, then
Pick your preferred alloy/composition, then
Pick your favorite manufacturer

For each instrument you own.

player metabolisms,

This. Elixirs hate my fingers. They get grimey and even rust quickly with me. Other coated strings do not.

You mean some little old Austrian woman is not winding my strings by hand by candlelight?

My personal opinion on why TI strings are so expensive? They have the absolutely nicest packaging on the market. The envelopes feel like they were made from coffee table book paper. Between that and the orchestra-like colored thread winds on the ends, and knowing they came all the way from Vienna to me ... I feel like Mozart opening their strings.

The strings themselves? Great, but absolutely no better than many of our domestic offerings.

Some of the best bass strings I ever had were from Radio Shack, early 80's. I think they cost around $10 back then and lasted forever.

Wonder if there is any NOS in a warehouse somewhere.

When bass players say strings last forever, I never know how to take that because that means different things to different people. Me, my Rotosounds start sounding too dull to me after about 3 shows. Others may prefer strings like this

Santa Cruz Parabolic Low Tension Strings

Only bought two pair because the used guitar came with these. So gave both the medium and lights a try but decided against any more after reverting back to my usual D'Addario Bronze Phosphorus (light tops / medium bottoms).

But have now given these up for 80.20 non-phosphorus.

My mentor had started me out with PB and cautioned against anything else for durability. But I've found out my hands don't eat them up so that's good. Because they really sound better to me. Had gotten interested because someone on YouTube mentioned everything you heard prior to early 70's was done with 80/20's... if they were a bronze alloy string.

BTW: only play acoustic.
