All my guitars are in the sub $400 range, and while I want to protect them well for a move... I don't want to spend a fortune on top of the line gear either. At the moment thinking that maybe settling on an economy bag for the bullet strat and maybe something a little higher end like a hardcase for the semi-hollow telecaster would be the best bet.

Any suggestions on cases for light traveling (like moving apartments)/local gigging? Here's some randoms I've found on Amazon:

Gator Economy
Gator Lightweight Polyfoam
Gator Deluxe ABS Molded
ChromaCast
Yaheetech Tweed

I think cheap gig bags that offer no internal support are a waste of money. Mono makes the best soft-sided gig bags and they are semi-rigid and some models have neck supports built in. But the cheapest is around $150 and that may be more than you want to spend for a $400 guitar.

The solution obviously is to buy more expensive guitars.

Hardshell cases are worth the investment. Last week, I was carrying my project guitar and accidentally dropped it on concrete, ruining the finish forever. If it had been in a hard case, it wouldn’t have even been phased by that.

For just moving from one place to another, you might consider something like this:

I love my PRS gig bag. Has lasted for 15+ years with great protection. Not a hard case but very padded.

Take it from a guy who sees mishap horror stories daily, you want as much case as you can get. Notice I said "case," not gig bag. I like the Gator and other injection molded cases for the purpose, lightweight and bang-for-buck factor.

If money's tight, check with local pawn shops to see if they have any left-behind stray cases in their hold warehouse. A lot of pawn guitars sell and their cases end up as oversights that are taking up space in the back. Same for music shops, they sometimes have stray cases in the back that they sold the guitars for them eons ago. Doesn't hurt to ask.

That's a good idea. I've also bought used cases on craigslist. Just take the guitar with you to make sure it fits.

I have three RoadRunner polyfoam cases and they are great. My USA Fender has a hardshell, but I feel comfortable putting my other basses in the RoadRunners. If I was a touring musician, that would be different.

Cool. I may check out the RoadRunner Polyfoam for the Strat as I would probably transport that less often and a Gator hardshell for the Tele which is the higher end of the two.

Sometimes, I will buy or trade for a not so great guitar, because it comes with a decent case, that will work for strats, and tellys or whatever, then get the guitar playable and give it to somebody and keep the case.

Pawn shops are a good place to pick up good used cases too, but you need to ask about them, they generally don't have them on display.

My Simon and Patrick parlor guitar came with a great custom gig bag that is very well made and heavily padded, but it probably would cost just as much as a hard shell case if you had to buy it. Most gig bags are trash though. Go spend a little money on good cases.

I bought an Epiphone wildcat guitar a couple of months ago, that didn't come with a case and it has a pretty unique size, so none of my cases would work with it. I ordered a custom case for it for less than 150 bucks, and it's really nice.

LOL, when I first brought it home and was checking it out, my little dog crawled into it and thought he found a nice new bed. He really liked it. He's still kind of mad at me for putting a guitar in it.

Anytime you buy a used guitar, ask if it has a case, sometimes it gets forgotten about, and you could have had it for free.
