Agree with you except I don’t consider Tedeschi Trucks as a spin off. I see it as Derek’s way of carrying on the band’s legacy.

Saw them live last night with my oldest kid. I was listening to them 30+ years ago and now my kid is a huge fan. I noticed a lot of younger people in the audience... they just fn rock.

Audiophile here with almost 6,000 CD's & the most eclectic taste in music imaginable. Riding in my car you'll hear my audio system crossfade from Barry White to Iron Maiden to Hank JR. to The Cure to Kool & the Gang to Boney James to KISS. I draw the line at Gangsta Rap.
No way to answer this question. But these guys..

made quite an impression on me

So Lame!

Metallica is definitely bigger than the Dead in every category. They are top 5 all time in the world in terms of sales.

Took my 22 year old Saturday night, too. His first time to see them live, my 7th. He loved it! I guess all those years of him having to listen to my music growing up has rubbed off on him.

"Greatest" is going to vary wildly based on taste.

"Most American", not in a patriotic sense but just as a representation of America, I think the Dead are hard to beat for that title in a narrative sense.

Their commercialism vs the counter-culture they were such a part of is a pretty American thing.

The deification of Jerry.

Blending so many different musical styles together... a lot of the big American bands are more "regional" because they lean one way or another on the music spectrum.

They kind of had that frontierism aspect to them in terms of the caravans that followed them around and their insane touring schedules (especially for the time they were in when they started).

And I'm not some massive deadhead or anything by any means. I just think theres a lot of meat on the bone there. And this really wasn't what you were asking in OP either, but oh well lol.

That opening jam is Franklin’s Tower. First time they did it was the night Jerry Garcia died. It became part of the song throughout the late 90s, until they kicked Dickey out.

I’m going to go ahead and nominate Van Halen for Kafka also.

My top 3 are

Eagles
Allman Bros
Metallica

Lots of honorable mentions that people have already brought up. But one glaring omission so far is Guns and Roses.

The GD is straight garbage right on par with Phish. Unless you are a hipster stoner, no one could name more than one GD song and maybe not even one

American Beauty is one of the best albums ever made.
Not a bad song on it.

You may not like them, but the Grateful Dead was a bunch of really talented musicians.

Going back a ways, but a case could be made for Buddy Holly and The Crickets.

This is an impossible question to answer

Tool
The Meters
Parliament Funkadelic
Galactic
RHCP
Metallica
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Boston
Allman Bros
ZZ Top
The Doors
The Cars
Journey
GnR
Van Halen
Tom Petty
Talking Heads
CCR

That doesn’t get into “single headliner”
BB King
Prince
Chuck Berry
Elvis

Mannie Fresh deserves a shout in here too.

I'm going to go with Linda Ronstadt and her backup band. Every member was a masterful musician, and of course, Linda was the greatest female pop vocalist that ever lived. I use the past tense because, sadly, she has parkinson's disease and it has taken her singing voice forever.
